Which kind of storage bed?
"Storage bed" covers three quite different mechanisms, and picking the wrong one is the most common regret. They are not interchangeable — use the storage filters above to narrow to the one that suits how you actually live.
Gas lift
Hydraulic struts hinge the entire mattress platform upward, opening the full footprint of the bed as a single cavity. This is far and away the largest capacity, and the right answer for suitcases, spare bedding and off-season clothing. The trade-off is access: you have to clear the bed to open it, so it suits things you reach for seasonally rather than daily. It also needs headroom above the bed to swing up. See gas lift bed frames.
Drawers
Two to four compartments built into the footboard or side rails, on runners. Much smaller capacity than gas lift, but you can open them without disturbing the bed — so this is the one for everyday items. Drawers need floor clearance in front to pull out fully, which is worth checking against your walking space and against any rug.
Bookcase headboards
Open cubbies, and on some models hinged compartments, built into the head of the bed. This is storage at arm's reach for books, a phone, a glass of water — and on several frames it replaces bedside tables entirely, which is the real win in a narrow room. A few pair it with integrated lighting or a USB charging point. See bookcase bed frames.
Plenty of frames here combine two of the three. Each card shows whether that frame is in stock, on pre-order or sold out.

How to Choose the Right Bed Frame with Storage
The best storage bed feels effortless in daily life — it gives you the extra room you need without making the bedroom feel heavy, crowded or overly practical. That balance matters whether you're furnishing a compact guest room, upgrading a main bedroom, or simply tired of the linen cupboard overflowing. Three designs get you there, each in its own way:
Gas lift
The whole mattress base lifts to open the full footprint as one concealed cavity — ideal for quilts, spare bedding and the things you don't reach for every day. Browse gas lift beds.
Drawers
A bed with drawers built into the base gives quick everyday access — guest-room linen, folded clothing and the small things you want close but out of sight. That's the heart of this collection.
Bookcase headboard
Built-in shelving keeps books, chargers and night-time essentials organised when bedside space is limited. Browse bookcase beds.
Gas Lift or Drawers: Which Suits Your Room?
Choose a gas lift when floor space around the frame is tight or you want one generous hidden zone — the storage opens upward, so no clearance is needed beside the bed. Choose a storage bed frame with drawers when you have 50–60 cm beside or at the foot of the bed and want faster access to the things you use often. Neither is automatically better — it depends on how you live, how often you reach for stored items, and how much circulation space the room allows. A premium upholstered or timber storage bed in a main bedroom can also reduce the need for extra furniture entirely.
Storage Beds in Every Size
Every size Australian homes use, each with its own dedicated range — from compact singles for kids' rooms through to the full king footprint. In most main bedrooms, a queen offers the best balance of footprint, comfort and concealed capacity, while a king suits larger rooms wanting scale and function together:
Choosing the Finish and Feel
Timber designs bring warmth and structure; upholstered frames in fabric or PU leather feel softer and more refined. The right choice depends on the look you're building, the texture already in the room, and whether you want the bed as a quiet backdrop or the visual centrepiece. Compare wooden bed frames, fabric bed frames and PU leather bed frames — or view the wider all bed frames collection if you're still weighing storage against non-storage styles.
Why Buy Your Storage Bed at A2Z
A storage bed is a more considered purchase than a standard base — drawer glide, cavity depth, strut feel and frame rigidity all matter, and all are easier to judge in person. We have showrooms in Brisbane (Rocklea), Ipswich, Bundall, Virginia and Beenleigh. Not every bed is on every showroom floor, so ask us which store has the one you want to see. Free delivery on eligible items within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only, and delivery across SE QLD at a cost; see our delivery terms. You can spread the cost with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free or PayPal Pay in 4.
Bed Frames with Storage — FAQs
What type of bed frame with storage is best for a small bedroom?
For tighter rooms, a gas lift design is often the smarter choice because the storage opens upward instead of relying on drawer clearance beside the bed. Drawer storage still works beautifully if you have enough space around the frame and want faster access to everyday items.
Are gas lift storage beds good for everyday use?
Yes — a well-built gas lift frame is practical for daily life and especially useful for bulkier items such as quilts, blankets, spare linen and seasonal clothing. It's the option to pick when you want the bedroom to stay visually calm and uncluttered.
Are drawer storage beds better than gas lift beds?
Not necessarily. Drawers are easier for frequent access, while gas lift bases typically provide a larger concealed zone. The better option depends on your room layout, how often you access stored items, and whether you value convenience or maximum capacity more.
What sizes do storage beds come in?
Every standard Australian size — single, king single, double, queen and king — each with its own dedicated collection linked above. Queen is the most popular balance of footprint and capacity for couples; singles and king singles are the kids' room favourites.
Will a storage bed fit a standard Australian mattress?
Yes — our storage beds are designed around standard Australian mattress sizes. Check the measurements on each product page (some storage designs have a slightly smaller internal platform than the overall frame width) and pair the frame with the right mattress before ordering.
Do you deliver and help with storage bed orders?
Free delivery on eligible items within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only, and delivery across SE QLD at a cost; see our delivery terms. See our delivery & pickup page or contact the team before purchase for advice on room fit and access.
What should I store inside a bed frame with storage?
Spare bedding, blankets, cushions, guest-room essentials and out-of-season clothing are the classics. If you need regular access, drawers are more convenient; if you want the largest hidden zone, a gas lift base is usually the better fit.
Complete the Bedroom
The storage bed carries the heavy lifting — finish the room with a mattress, bedside tables, tallboys & chests of drawers, and coordinating bedroom furniture. For the kids' rooms, see kids beds.
