What a pillow top actually is
A pillow top is an additional comfort layer — usually memory foam or a soft fibre fill — stitched onto the top of the mattress, sitting above the pocket-spring support system.
It works like a built-in topper: a dedicated cushioned layer you can feel immediately, without the slipping and replacing of a separate one. The pocket springs underneath still do the supporting; the pillow top changes what the surface feels like, not how the mattress holds you.
Pillow top vs euro top — the real difference
These are the two ways that cushioned top layer is attached, and the difference is genuine, not marketing:
- Pillow top: the layer is stitched on with a visible gusset, so it sits as a distinct, lofty cushion above the mattress edge. This is the plushest, most "sink-in" look and feel.
- Euro top: the same idea, but the layer is flush-stitched level with the mattress edges with no gap. The profile is cleaner, the feel slightly denser, and edge support is a little better than a traditional pillow top.
This range includes both. The honest way to choose between them: if you want the plushest, most cushioned sink-in feel and don't mind the lofty raised profile, go pillow top.
If you'd rather a cleaner, lower-profile look with a slightly firmer, denser surface and a little more support right to the edge, go euro top. Same underlying idea — an added comfort layer over the pocket springs — executed two ways. It's genuinely a feel decision worth making in person.
