Choosing a Pillow Top Mattress
Pillow top is one of the most misunderstood terms in mattress shopping, because it sounds like a firmness ("soft") when it's actually a construction (a layer). Get that distinction right and the rest of the decision is straightforward. Here's the honest version.
What a pillow top actually is
A pillow top is an additional comfort layer — usually memory foam or a soft fibre fill — stitched onto the top of the mattress, sitting above the pocket-spring support system.
It works like a built-in topper: a dedicated cushioned layer you can feel immediately, without the slipping and replacing of a separate one. The pocket springs underneath still do the supporting; the pillow top changes what the surface feels like, not how the mattress holds you.
Pillow top vs euro top — the real difference
These are the two ways that cushioned top layer is attached, and the difference is genuine, not marketing:
- Pillow top: the layer is stitched on with a visible gusset, so it sits as a distinct, lofty cushion above the mattress edge. This is the plushest, most "sink-in" look and feel.
- Euro top: the same idea, but the layer is flush-stitched level with the mattress edges with no gap. The profile is cleaner, the feel slightly denser, and edge support is a little better than a traditional pillow top.
This range includes both. The honest way to choose between them: if you want the plushest, most cushioned sink-in feel and don't mind the lofty raised profile, go pillow top.
If you'd rather a cleaner, lower-profile look with a slightly firmer, denser surface and a little more support right to the edge, go euro top. Same underlying idea — an added comfort layer over the pocket springs — executed two ways. It's genuinely a feel decision worth making in person.
Who a pillow top suits
- Side sleepers: the cushioned layer lets the shoulder and hip settle in, easing pressure where a flatter surface concentrates it.
- Anyone who likes a plush, cushioned first feel: it's the most immediately soft surface we offer.
- People who'd otherwise buy a topper: a pillow top builds that layer in, so it can't slip, bunch or need replacing separately.
…and who might look elsewhere
If you want a firm, flat, supportive surface — back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds often do — a pillow top's cushioned layer works against that; firm or extra firm is the better direction. And remember the layer adds cushioning, not coolness or contour specifically — if body-hugging contour is the goal, look at memory foam.
Pillow top is a surface, firmness is separate
This is the part worth getting right. A pillow top adds a plush top layer; how firm the mattress feels overall still depends on the support build beneath it, which ranges from medium-firm to plush:
- PlushPillow top over a softer build — the most cushioned, sink-in feel. See soft & plush.
- Medium firmPillow top over a balanced build — cushioned surface, supportive underneath. See medium firm.
- The baseIndependent pocket springs under the layer carry the support and reduce partner disturbance.
Available sizes
The pillow-top range covers every standard Australian size:
- Single & king single — kids', single and guest rooms.
- Double — a solo adult with room, or a couple in a compact bedroom.
- Queen, king & super king — the standard, premium and largest couples sizes.
Why buy your pillow top mattress from A2Z
The A2Z Furniture is a family-run Australian business established in 2013. A pillow top is a feel you really want to judge by lying on it — the loft and softness vary more than a spec line can convey.
So trying it matters: ask which of our five South-East Queensland showrooms (Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh) has the one you want on display.
Selling from our own Brisbane warehouse instead of through a reseller means no retail margin is built into what you pay. Pick-up is available seven days a week, plus delivery free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only.
Every mattress carries a manufacturer's warranty (the period varies by model — check the product page) — see our warranty policy — and you can spread the cost interest-free with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4. Pillow Top Mattress FAQs
What is a pillow top mattress?
A mattress with an extra comfort layer — usually memory foam or soft fibre fill — stitched onto the top, over a pocket-spring base. It works like a built-in topper: a dedicated cushioned surface you feel first, with the springs supporting underneath.
What's the difference between a pillow top and a euro top?
Both add a plush top layer, and this range includes both. A pillow top is stitched on with a visible gusset, sitting as a distinct lofty cushion — the plushest, most sink-in look and feel.
A euro top is flush-stitched level with the edges with no gap — a cleaner, lower profile, slightly denser feel and better edge support. Choose pillow top for maximum plushness, euro top for a tidier profile with a touch more support.
Is a pillow top mattress the same as soft?
No — and this is the key thing. Pillow top is a construction (an added top layer); soft is a firmness. A pillow top adds cushioning to the surface, but how firm the mattress feels overall depends on the build underneath, which ranges from medium-firm to plush. You choose both.
Who is a pillow top mattress best for?
Side sleepers (the layer lets the shoulder and hip settle in), anyone who likes a plush first feel, and people who'd otherwise add a topper. Back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds usually prefer firm instead.
Does a pillow top wear out faster?
A cushioned top layer will soften with use over time, as any comfort layer does — it's a feel that mellows rather than a fault. Rotating the mattress where the design allows helps it wear evenly. Every mattress is covered by its manufacturer's warranty.
How much does a pillow top mattress cost at A2Z?
From around $129 for a single, rising with size and the build underneath. The product grid above shows current pricing. Interest-free payment is available through Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4.
What sizes do pillow top mattresses come in?
Every standard Australian size — single, king single, double, queen, king and super king.
Do you deliver pillow top mattresses, or can I pick one up?
Both. Pick-up from our Brisbane (Rocklea) warehouse is available seven days a week, and delivery is free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only — see our delivery details.
