Mattress in a Box

How to Choose a Mattress in a Box

The trap with boxed mattresses is shopping the box instead of the bed. The box is just compression for transport — what matters for your sleep is the construction inside it.

So the right way to choose is: pick the construction that suits how you sleep, then take it boxed for the easy delivery. This guide covers how the box works, which constructions we box, and who the format suits.

How a mattress in a box works

• 1Compressed & rolled: the full mattress is vacuum-compressed, rolled and sealed into a box small enough to carry through doorways and fit in a car.
• 2Unbox where it'll live: move the box to the room first — it's far easier to handle boxed than a full mattress up a staircase.
• 3Let it expand: once unwrapped it begins expanding to full shape. Most are usable the same day; allowing it to rest and air out fully gives the truest feel.

Which constructions come in a box

This is where we differ from most boxed-mattress sellers, who only offer foam. You can have the box format across the full range:

• Memory foam: contouring pressure relief on a pocket-spring base — the classic boxed feel, with cooling gel options.
• Pocket spring: responsive, breathable individually-wrapped coil support with a choice of comfort layer.
• Latex: buoyant, cool, durable latex over a spring base — the premium option, boxed.
• Bonnell spring: firm, breathable, value traditional innerspring — the most affordable boxed option.

Pick the construction on its merits using each collection's guide; the box is simply how it gets to you.

Who the box format suits best

• Tight access or upstairs bedrooms: a boxed mattress goes where a full one won't — through narrow doorways, around tight stairwells, into apartments.
• Self-transport and pick-up: the box fits in a car, so warehouse pick-up is genuinely practical rather than a two-person struggle.
• New places and quick turnarounds: moving house, setting up a rental, or a guest room needed by the weekend — boxed is the fastest path from buy to sleep.
• Sending one to someone: a compact box is far easier to deliver to family than an unwieldy full mattress.

…and when to think twice

The box format itself has no real downside — but don't let it drive the decision. If a particular construction you want isn't offered boxed in the size you need, choose the construction first and take it however it ships; the bed you sleep on for years matters more than the packaging it arrives in.

And if you'd rather not handle expansion yourself at all, our local delivery brings any mattress to you, boxed or not (free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only).

Firmness

"In a box" doesn't have a firmness — the construction you choose inside it does. A boxed memory foam contours; a boxed Bonnell is firm and even; a boxed latex is responsive. So choose firmness through the construction and the firmness ranges, not the format:

• Softer, contouring feel — soft & plush or memory foam.
• Balanced everyday support — medium firm.
• Firm, supportive feel — firm or extra firm.

Shop boxed mattresses by size

The box format is available in every size we stock. Once the construction and feel are right, choose your size — each size collection shows the options in it, with size-specific pricing:

• Single & king single — kids' rooms, guest rooms, bunks, teens and solo sleepers.
• Double — solo adults wanting room, or couples in a compact bedroom.
• Queen & king — the standard and premium couples sizes.
• Super king — the largest standard size for big master bedrooms.

Why buy your boxed mattress from A2Z

The A2Z Furniture is a family-run Australian business established in 2013, and here's the real difference from online-only box brands: you don't have to gamble on a construction you've never felt.

Ask which of our five South-East Queensland showrooms (Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh) has the one you want on display, then have it delivered compressed and boxed for easy handling.

Selling from our own Brisbane warehouse instead of through a reseller means no retail margin is built into what you pay. Pick-up is available seven days a week (the box makes that genuinely easy), plus delivery free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only.

Every mattress carries a manufacturer's warranty (the period varies by model — check the product page) — see our warranty policy — and you can spread the cost interest-free with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4.
