Soft & Plush Mattress

Choosing the Right Soft or Plush Mattress

The most useful thing to understand about a soft mattress is that "soft" isn't a type of mattress — it's a result. The same construction can be built soft or firm.

So the right way to choose is: decide how soft you need the surface to be, then pick the construction underneath that suits you. This guide explains how softness is actually built and — honestly — who a soft mattress isn't right for.

How a mattress is made soft (the part worth knowing)

Two things set firmness, and both can be tuned in any construction:

• Spring wire gauge: the thickness of the spring wire. A thinner gauge flexes more easily, giving a softer feel; a thicker gauge resists more, giving a firmer one.
• Comfort-layer density: the foam or fibre layers above the springs. Lower-density, more giving comfort layers feel plush; denser, firmer layers feel supportive.

Because both levers exist in every construction, you'll find soft and plush builds across Bonnell spring, pocket spring, memory foam and latex — it's not limited to foam. That's why this page is organised by feel, with the construction as your second choice.

A note on pillow top and euro top

One common way to get a soft surface is an added cushioned top layer — a pillow top (a distinct lofty gusseted cushion) or a euro top (the same layer flush-stitched for a tidier edge).

That's a construction choice rather than a firmness one, so it has its own home: see the pillow top range for how that surface is built and how the two differ. This page stays focused on the softness itself — how soft you want the feel, whatever the surface above the support.

Who a soft or plush mattress suits best

• Side sleepers: a plush surface lets shoulders and hips settle in, keeping the spine aligned and easing the pressure that causes morning aches.
• Pressure-point and joint pain: the give spreads weight rather than concentrating it where the body is widest.
• Lighter builds: less weight needs less resistance to stay supported, so a soft feel still holds you well.
• Anyone a firm bed leaves aching: if you wake with sore shoulders or hips on a firm mattress, softer is usually the fix.

…and who should think twice

Honest limits, because the wrong firmness is the most common mattress regret. If you're a back or stomach sleeper, a heavier build, or you share with a partner and need consistent support, a very soft surface can let the hips sink too far and pull the spine out of line — you'll usually sleep better on medium firm or firm.

Soft is about pressure relief, not support — if you need more support than cushioning, don't talk yourself into plush because it feels nice for the first minute in the showroom.

Soft & plush, by construction

Once you know you want a soft feel, the construction underneath changes the character of it:

• Memory foam: the deepest, most moulded soft feel — slow contour that cradles.
• Pocket spring: plush on top with responsive spring support underneath — soft without feeling bottomless.
• Latex: a softer surface that still springs back — cushioned but buoyant, and the coolest-sleeping soft option.
• Bonnell spring: a softer comfort layer over the value innerspring — the most affordable way into a plush feel.

Where soft sits on the firmness scale

This collection is the soft end. If you test one and it's not quite right, the firmer ranges are one step across:

• Soft / plushYou're here — the most cushioned, pressure-relieving surface. Best for side sleepers and lighter builds.
• MediumBalanced cushion and support — the broadest-appeal feel. See medium firm.
• FirmSupportive with minimal sink — suits back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds. See firm.
• Extra firmMaximum support, minimal give. See extra firm.

A note on soft mattresses and Queensland heat

One honest trade-off: the more you sink into a surface, the more of you it surrounds, so a very plush bed can sleep slightly warmer than a firm one.

It's usually minor, but if you run hot and still want soft, lean toward a latex or gel-infused memory foam soft build, or a plush pocket spring — all of which keep the cushion while sleeping cooler.
