Choosing the Right Extra Firm Mattress
Extra firm is the most specialised firmness — and the easiest to buy wrongly because it sounds like "more is better." It isn't more support for everyone; it's maximum support for a specific group, and a poor fit for others. This guide is honest about both, including correcting a common myth about what extra firm does for pressure.
Who an extra firm mattress is genuinely for
- Heavier builds: more weight needs more resistance to stay supported. Where a softer or even firm bed can bottom out, extra firm holds the spine level.
- Back and stomach sleepers who want maximum support: it keeps the hips from sinking at all, holding a flat, neutral spine — the strongest version of that support.
- People who find a normal firm bed still too soft: if you've tried firm and wanted more, this is the next step rather than topping a firm bed.
The honest part: extra firm is not "more pressure relief"
This is the most common misunderstanding, and worth being straight about. Extra firm is about support and alignment, not cushioning. It does not reduce pressure points — it does the opposite. If you wake with a numb arm, a sore shoulder or an aching hip, that's pressure, and a firmer surface usually makes it worse, not better.
The fix for pressure is more give, not less: look at soft & plush or medium firm. Choosing extra firm to solve a pressure problem is the single most common regret with this firmness — we'd rather tell you that up front than sell you the wrong bed.
…and who should not choose extra firm
- Side sleepers: without give, the shoulder and hip take concentrated pressure — this is usually the wrong firmness for you. Go soft or medium firm rather than buying extra firm and trying to patch it with a topper.
- Lighter builds: not enough body weight to compress the surface, so it can feel unyielding and unsupportive at the same time.
- Anyone unsure: extra firm is a strong, specific feel — if you don't clearly need maximum support, medium firm or firm is the safer choice.
Extra firm and back pain — being straight about it
"Extra firm" and "orthopedic" get used interchangeably, but orthopedic isn't a regulated or certified category — it's a marketing term. A supportive surface that keeps the spine aligned suits many people who want strong support, and that's what this range is. We won't claim a mattress treats or cures back pain — firmness is one factor, the right level is individual, and if you have a specific back condition it's worth discussing with your health professional alongside testing the feel in person.
What's inside
Most extra firm mattresses get their hardness from a coconut coir layer — a dense, naturally rigid fibre pad — set over an innerspring or high-density foam base for support and durability. The remaining firmness comes from a heavier spring wire gauge and a dense, firm comfort layer: the same two levers that set any firmness, tuned here with coir for the strongest support and minimal sink.
Where extra firm sits on the firmness scale
- Soft / plushMost cushion and pressure relief — for side sleepers and lighter builds. See soft & plush.
- Medium firmBalanced cushion and support — the broadest-appeal feel. See medium firm.
- FirmStrong support, minimal sink, usually still cushioned on top. See firm.
- Extra firmYou're here — maximum, near board-like support with minimal give.
Available sizes
Extra firm is a focused range pitched at main and shared beds:
- Double — the entry point to the extra firm range.
- Queen & king — the standard and premium couples sizes.
- Super king — the largest standard size for big master bedrooms.
Why buy your extra firm mattress from A2Z
The A2Z Furniture is a family-run Australian business established in 2013. Extra firm is a strong, specific feel and the easiest firmness to misjudge from a screen, so trying it before you commit genuinely matters: ask which of our five South-East Queensland showrooms (Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh) has the one you want on display. Because the mattresses come in direct to our Brisbane warehouse, you're not paying a shopfront markup on top.
Pick-up is available seven days a week, plus delivery free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only. Every mattress carries a manufacturer's warranty (the period varies by model — check the product page) — see our warranty policy — and you can spread the cost interest-free with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4. Verified customer reviews are shown on each product to help you compare. Prefer to talk it through? Call our team on 1300 781 990.
Extra Firm Mattress FAQs
What's the difference between firm and extra firm?
Firm gives strong support but usually keeps a cushioned surface. Extra firm goes further — a near board-like feel with minimal give, the maximum support we offer. If you want strong-but-still-comfortable, start with the firm range; choose extra firm only if you specifically need the most rigid support.
Will an extra firm mattress help my sore hip or shoulder?
Usually the opposite. A sore hip or shoulder is a pressure problem, and extra firm reduces give, which tends to make pressure worse, not better. The fix for pressure is more cushioning — see soft & plush or medium firm. Extra firm is for support and alignment, not pressure relief.
Is an extra firm mattress the same as orthopedic?
"Orthopedic" isn't a regulated or certified category — it's a marketing term. Many people wanting one are after strong supportive alignment, which this range provides. We describe these as extra firm and supportive rather than make a medical claim; for a specific back condition, the right firmness is individual and worth discussing with your health professional.
Who is extra firm best for?
Heavier builds, and back or stomach sleepers who want maximum support and find a normal firm bed still too soft. Side sleepers and lighter builds are usually better on medium firm or soft.
How much does an extra firm mattress cost at A2Z?
From around $699 for a queen — the entry size for this range — rising for king and super king. The product grid above shows current pricing. Interest-free payment is available through Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4.
What sizes does extra firm come in?
Double, Queen, King and Super King — there's no single or king single in extra firm. For those sizes the firm range is the closest match and covers every size.
Do you deliver extra firm mattresses, or can I pick one up?
Both. Pick-up from our Brisbane (Rocklea) warehouse is available seven days a week, and delivery is free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only — see our delivery details.
