Overview

Full-base storage, without the drawers

The Cannon is built around its storage. The entire mattress base lifts up on dual gas struts to reveal a substantial under-bed compartment beneath — the full footprint of the bed, sectioned internally with vertical timber dividers so spare bedding, off-season clothing and suitcases stay organised rather than piled together. Above it, vertical reeded panels in a deep Mendozza Oak stain wrap the headboard, footboard and side rails, with a soft-touch upholstered fabric insert centring the headboard. Available in Queen and King, with matching pieces in the wider Cannon range.

Full under-bed gas-lift storage

Dual gas struts run between the slat base and the timber storage box, lifting the mattress and slats together when you raise the bed from the foot end. The struts take the weight so the lift stays smooth from closed to fully open — designed for one-person operation.

Vertical reeded timber detail

The same continuous fluted profile wraps the headboard surround, footboard, side rails and storage-box panels in a deep Mendozza Oak stain — adding texture and shadow play that flat timber surfaces don't deliver.

Padded headboard insert

A soft-touch upholstered fabric panel centres the headboard, framed by the reeded timber surround — comfortable to lean against while sitting up in bed to read or watch TV, where a bare timber bedhead would be the only surface.

Part of the 4-piece Cannon range

The Cannon is the bed in a four-piece coordinated range — matching Bedside Table, Tallboy, and Dresser with Mirror all sold separately, each carrying the same reeded timber detailing and Mendozza Oak finish.

Works with your mattress

Will it fit your mattress?

A bed frame is only right with the right mattress. Here's what's included, what to buy, and how the gas-lift slat base supports it — the details most bed listings leave out.

🛏️

Mattress not included

Sold as the frame only. Choose your size, then pair a standard Australian mattress of the same size. See mattress options →

📏

Buy the matching size

Each frame fits a standard AU mattress of the same name — a Queen frame takes a 153 × 203 cm Queen mattress. The full size chart is in Dimensions.

🪵

Wooden slats on a steel lift frame, no box spring

Straight wooden slats are fixed across the gas-lift steel frame and hold the mattress directly — no box spring or extra foundation needed. Works with foam, hybrid and spring mattresses.

Slat base & mattress support

Slat base included — suited to spring mattresses, and supports most foam and hybrid mattresses too. If you're matching a specific foam or hybrid mattress, check the slat spacing with our team before ordering, since some foam-mattress warranties require gaps under ~7.5 cm.

A note on gas-lift bases: the struts are calibrated to take the weight of a standard mattress, so heavier options — pocket spring, latex or hybrid — sit and lift better than a very lightweight mattress. If you'd like us to confirm a specific mattress suits the gas-lift mechanism, contact our team and we'll check it for you.

Total height = slat height (30 cm) + your mattress depth. Ships flat-packed in 6 boxes; the longest box runs up to 245 cm — measure your access route and check it fits your vehicle for pickup. A screwdriver is needed (electric drill recommended); two people are recommended, as the gas-lift mechanism requires careful installation. Measurements are taken by hand and can vary slightly between shipments — for an exact current figure, call the showroom on 07 3161 5415.

⬆️Gas-lift base

Needs vertical clearance to lift the base, so it can't sit under a low window, shelf or sloped ceiling. Check the mattress weight range the struts are rated for.

🧭Room clearance

Allow 60–75 cm around the piece to move comfortably; remember the frame footprint runs a few cm larger than the mattress.

📦Ships flat-packed

Cartons clear a standard ~80 cm doorway even when the assembled piece is large. Still worth measuring for the bigger sizes.

🚙Pickup vehicle

For free Rocklea pickup, a flat-pack fits most cars, but an assembled or oversized item needs a van, ute or trailer.

Materials & care

Built to live with

Reeded timber · padded insert · 12-month warranty · care guide

About the construction

The Cannon uses a deliberate combination of materials. The structural elements — the side rails and main frame — are solid rubberwood, joined with metal corner brackets. The decorative panels — the vertical reeded headboard surround, the footboard, and the side panels of the storage box — are MDF with a rubberwood veneer that matches the solid timber in colour and grain. The headboard centres on an upholstered fabric insert over a padded backing.

This is intentional. Fully solid timber on wide flat panels (a tall reeded headboard, a substantial storage-box footboard) is heavier, costlier, and prone to warping as timber expands and contracts. MDF with veneer stays flat and stable across large surfaces, while the rubberwood veneer keeps the finish consistent with the solid side rails. The whole frame is stained in the same Mendozza Oak so the materials read as one continuous piece.

Care instructions

🧹

Dust the reeded grooves weekly

Use a soft dry cloth or a soft brush across the vertical reeded panels. Dust collects in the reed grooves faster than on flat timber — a quick weekly pass keeps the texture reading cleanly.

🛋️

Vacuum the padded headboard insert

Run a soft-brush vacuum attachment across the upholstered headboard panel weekly. Blot any spills with a clean dry cloth immediately, working from the outside in — don't rub.

💧

Damp, never wet on the timber

For spills on the timber surfaces, use a barely-damp cloth and dry the area immediately. Standing water can damage the veneer finish and dull the Mendozza Oak stain over time.

⚙️

Operate the gas lift smoothly

Always lift from the designated foot-end handle and let the gas struts do the work — don't force the base up or slam it down. The struts are built for years of regular use when operated as intended.

FAQ

Common questions

The Cannon comes in Queen and King only — Single, King Single and Double are not available for this bed. It takes a standard mattress of the matching size. Pick your size from the tiles above the Add to Cart button; the full size chart is in the Dimensions section.

The mechanism uses dual gas struts mounted between the slat base and the timber storage box. You lift from the designated foot-end handle — the struts take the weight of the mattress and slats so the lift stays smooth from closed to fully open. The compartment runs the full footprint of the bed and is divided internally by vertical timber dividers, useful for keeping spare bedding, off-season clothing and suitcases organised rather than piled together. It's designed for one-person operation under normal use.

It's a hybrid construction. The structural elements (side rails and main frame) are solid rubberwood with metal corner brackets. The decorative panels (the reeded headboard surround, footboard and storage-box panels) are MDF with a rubberwood veneer that matches the solid timber in colour and grain. MDF with veneer stays flatter and more stable than solid timber across wide flat panels, while the side rails and frame benefit from solid timber's strength. The whole frame is stained in the same Mendozza Oak so it reads as one piece.

The headboard combines a reeded timber surround running around the outer edge with a soft-touch upholstered fabric panel centring the headboard, over a padded backing. It's comfortable to lean against when sitting up in bed to read or watch TV, where the bare timber surround would otherwise be the only surface. The combination keeps the timber detailing as the headline look while adding comfort where it's actually useful.

The Cannon is sold as a frame only — no mattress is included. Straight wooden slats are built into the gas-lift mechanism (mounted to the metal lift frame), so you don't need an ensemble base or a separate slat set; the mattress goes straight on the slats. Gas-lift bases work best with mattresses of standard weight, so heavier pocket spring, latex or hybrid options pair particularly well with the Cannon.

Yes — the Cannon ships flat-packed in six boxes with clear instructions. A screwdriver is needed (an electric drill is recommended), and two people are recommended, as the gas-lift mechanism requires careful installation. You can add professional assembly in the buy box to have our team put it together and set the mechanism on delivery day (ground level only).

Yes — the Cannon is on display across our five SE QLD showrooms: Rocklea, Virginia, Beenleigh, Bundall (Gold Coast) and North Ipswich. Floor models and current stock can vary, so we recommend calling ahead if you'd like to see the gas-lift mechanism operate in person, or compare the full 4-piece Cannon range together.

Specs, styling & related ranges

Gas-lift beds answer a different storage problem than drawer beds do. Drawer beds give you a handful of small compartments for everyday-access items; gas-lift beds give you the full footprint of the bed for bulk storage of things you reach for seasonally. The Cannon takes this further than most by sectioning the internal compartment with vertical timber dividers — you don't end up with one large cavity where everything piles together, but organised sections that keep spare bedding separate from off-season clothing, suitcases separate from sleeping bags. For Queensland bedrooms where wardrobe space is tight or built-in robes are limited, the difference is meaningful.

The visual design is built around vertical reeded detailing. The reeded panels wrap the entire bed — headboard surround, footboard, side rails and storage-box panels — in the same continuous fluted profile. Combined with the Mendozza Oak finish and the soft-touch upholstered fabric insert centring the headboard, the result reads as substantial and contemporary without veering into either fully traditional timber or fully upholstered territory. The mixed-material headboard gives you a comfortable surface to lean against while sitting up in bed without sacrificing the timber detailing as the headline look.

The Cannon is sold as a frame only in Queen and King sizes; a mattress isn't included — browse our pocket spring and latex ranges, or the full mattress collection. It's part of a four-piece coordinated range — the matching Cannon Bedside Table, Cannon Tallboy and Cannon Dresser with Mirror all carry the same reeded timber detailing and Mendozza Oak finish, sold separately. Browse more gas lift bed frames or the full bed frame range, or see the Cannon in person at any of our five SE QLD showrooms — Rocklea, Virginia, Beenleigh, Bundall (Gold Coast) and North Ipswich — where you can operate the gas-lift mechanism yourself before ordering.
