Which kind of storage bed?
"Storage bed" covers three quite different mechanisms, and picking the wrong one is the most common regret. They are not interchangeable — use the storage filters above to narrow to the one that suits how you actually live.
Gas lift
Hydraulic struts hinge the entire mattress platform upward, opening the full footprint of the bed as a single cavity. This is far and away the largest capacity, and the right answer for suitcases, spare bedding and off-season clothing. The trade-off is access: you have to clear the bed to open it, so it suits things you reach for seasonally rather than daily. It also needs headroom above the bed to swing up. Drawers
Two to four compartments built into the footboard or side rails, on runners. Much smaller capacity than gas lift, but you can open them without disturbing the bed — so this is the one for everyday items. Drawers need floor clearance in front to pull out fully, which is worth checking against your walking space and against any rug.
Bookcase headboards
Open cubbies, and on some models hinged compartments, built into the head of the bed. This is storage at arm's reach for books, a phone, a glass of water — and on several frames it replaces bedside tables entirely, which is the real win in a narrow room.
