Bunk Beds & Trundle Beds in Brisbane
Two kids in one room, a guest who stays over every other weekend, a bedroom that has to fit a desk as well as a bed: this page covers the beds built for those jobs. There are three ways to do it. Stack a single over a single, stack a single over a double so three can sleep, or keep everything at floor level with a trundle that slides out from under a full-size bed.

Bunk Bed Safety in Australia
Every new bunk bed sold in Australia must meet a mandatory safety standard based on AS/NZS 4220. These are the habits that keep the top bunk safe:
- Top bunk from age 9. Australian product safety guidance is that children under 9 shouldn't sleep on the top bunk.
- Keep the guard rail working. The rail must sit at least 160 mm above the top mattress, so choose a slimmer mattress up top.
- Mind the ceiling fan. Queensland guidance is to keep at least 2 m between the top bunk and a ceiling fan.
- Use the ladder, and no play up top. Children should never jump or play on a bunk bed, especially the top bunk.
- Check the fittings. Keep screws and fasteners tight, and re-check them after the first few weeks and after any move.
For the full guidance, see Product Safety Australia and the Queensland Government's bunk bed advice.
Single Over Single or Single Over Double?
Single over single
Two singles in the footprint of one. The Neves single over single measures 160.4 cm wide, 201 cm deep and 161.7 cm high. It's the pick for two siblings close in age who both want their own bed.
Single over double
A triple sleeper: a single on top and a full double below, with a full-length guard rail and an integrated ladder. The Neves single over double suits an older child who wants the bigger bed, or a household that hosts sleepovers.
Trundle instead
No ladder and no ceiling height to think about. The Fraser is a Queen or King bed with a single trundle on one side and two drawers on the other. Both are on wheels, so you choose the side at assembly.
Measure the Room First
Ceiling height is the number that matters most. The Neves single over single stands 161.7 cm tall. Under a standard 2.4 m ceiling, that leaves about 78 cm above the top of the frame, and less once the mattress is on. A child on the top bunk needs to sit up without hitting their head. Allow room beside the bunk for the ladder. For a trundle, allow enough clear floor in front of the bed for the trundle to roll fully out.
Choosing the Mattresses
Frames are sold without mattresses, and each sleeping space needs its own.
- Top bunk: a slim single, so the guard rail stays at least 160 mm above it. Browse thin mattresses and kids mattresses.
- Bottom bunk: a standard single or double mattress, whichever the frame takes.
- Trundle: a standard single (about 92 × 188 cm). A mattress in a box works well for a trundle that only comes out for guests.

Bunk Bed & Trundle Bed FAQs
Do bunk beds sold in Australia have to meet a safety standard?
Yes. All new bunk beds sold in Australia must meet a mandatory safety standard based on AS/NZS 4220. Among other things, it requires guard rails on the top bunk that sit at least 160 mm above the top of the mattress, and no gaps that could trap a child's head.
What age is the top bunk suitable for?
Australian product safety guidance is that the top bunk isn't recommended for children under 9. Younger children can take the bottom bunk instead, or the double below on the Neves single over double.
How thick should the top bunk mattress be?
Thin enough that the guard rail still sits at least 160 mm above the mattress surface. That usually means a slimmer mattress on top than you would choose for an everyday bed. Check the frame for any maximum mattress height marked on it.
What mattresses do I need?
The Neves single over single takes two standard single mattresses. The Neves single over double takes a standard single on top and a standard double below. The Fraser trundle takes a Queen or King to match the frame, plus a standard single (about 92 x 188 cm) in the trundle. Mattresses are sold separately.
How much ceiling height do I need?
The Neves single over single stands 161.7 cm tall. In a room with a standard 2.4 m ceiling, that leaves about 78 cm above the top of the frame, and less above the mattress. Measure your room before you buy, and keep at least 2 m between the top bunk and any ceiling fan.
Can a trundle bed replace a bunk?
Often, yes. A trundle gives you a second bed at floor level, so there is no ladder to climb and no ceiling height to worry about. It suits younger children, guests and rooms with low or sloping ceilings.
Do bunk and trundle beds need assembling?
Yes. They arrive flat-packed with instructions. Bunk and trundle beds have more parts than a standard bed, so allow extra time and have two people on hand. Re-check the bolts after the first few weeks.
