Choosing the Right Coir Mattress
Coir is a specialist construction with a clear profile: firm, breathable and natural. It isn't trying to be a soft or contouring bed, and choosing it well means understanding what it does brilliantly and being honest about who it doesn't suit. This guide covers the construction, its genuine strengths, and where you'd be better off elsewhere.
What an A2Z coir mattress actually is
Coconut coir is the coarse, springy fibre extracted from coconut husks. In our mattresses it's used as a firm fibre support layer over a supportive base, rather than as a single all-coir slab — the coir provides the rigid, even support, and the base underneath carries it.
It's the same material that gives most of our extra firm mattresses their hardness; a coir mattress puts that natural-fibre firmness front and centre as the construction itself.
What coir does genuinely well
- Firm, even support: coir is naturally rigid, so it holds the spine flat and resists sinking — strong support for back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds.
- Exceptional airflow: the coarse, open fibre structure breathes extremely well — among the coolest-sleeping constructions we stock, which is a real advantage through a humid Brisbane or Gold Coast summer.
- Durable and resilient: coir holds its shape and resists compression over years of use.
- A natural, renewable fibre: coir is made from coconut husk, a by-product of coconut harvesting, which makes it a more renewable material than many synthetic alternatives.
Who a coir mattress suits best
- Firm-preference sleepers: if you find most mattresses too soft, coir's natural rigidity is a strong, supportive surface.
- Hot sleepers: the open fibre breathes better than foam — one of the most naturally ventilated beds we offer.
- Back and stomach sleepers: the even, firm support keeps the hips from sinking and the spine neutral.
- Buyers who want a natural-fibre bed: coir is a natural, renewable material if that matters to you.
…and who should look elsewhere
Honest steer, because coir is a firm, specific feel. If you're a side sleeper, a lighter build, or you want pressure relief and cushioning, coir's rigidity will work against you — you'll likely wake with shoulder or hip pressure.
Look at soft & plush or medium firm instead. If you want contour and a moulded feel, memory foam is the opposite of coir and the better direction. Coir is about firm natural support, not comfort-layer softness.
Coir and the firmness scale
Coir sits at the firm end by nature. It's the natural-fibre route to firm support; the firmness collections are the route by feel:
- Soft / plushThe opposite of coir — most cushion, for side sleepers. See soft & plush.
- Medium firmBalanced cushion and support. See medium firm.
- FirmStrong support — coir naturally sits around here. See the firm range (all sizes).
- Extra firmMaximum support — mostly coir-based. See extra firm.
Available sizes
Coir is a focused, premium range pitched at main and shared beds:
- Queen — the entry point to the coir range.
- King — more width per sleeper for couples.
- Super king — the largest standard size for big master bedrooms.

Coir Mattress FAQs
What is a coir mattress?
A mattress built around coconut coir — the coarse, rigid fibre from coconut husks — used as a firm support layer over a supportive base. It gives strong, even, breathable support with a natural-fibre material rather than foam or springs as the comfort layer.
Is a coir mattress firm?
Yes — firm is coir's defining quality. It's naturally rigid and supportive, which suits firm-preference, back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds. It's the natural-fibre route to firm support; it's also the material behind most of our extra firm mattresses.
Does a coir mattress sleep cool?
It's one of coir's real strengths. The coarse, open fibre structure allows excellent air circulation — heat moves through it rather than building up — making it among the most naturally breathable constructions we stock, which counts on a humid Queensland night.
Who should not choose a coir mattress?
Side sleepers, lighter builds, and anyone wanting pressure relief or a cushioned feel — coir's rigidity tends to concentrate pressure on the shoulder and hip. Soft & plush or medium firm suit those needs better; memory foam if you want contour.
Is coir an eco-friendly material?
Coir is made from coconut husk, a by-product of coconut harvesting, so it's a more renewable choice than many synthetic materials. We'd describe it as a natural, renewable fibre rather than make broader environmental claims.
How much does a coir mattress cost at A2Z?
It's a premium range, with Queen starting from around $699 and rising for King and Super King. The product grid above shows current pricing. Interest-free payment is available through Afterpay, Zip, Klarna, Latitude Interest Free and PayPal Pay in 4.
What sizes do coir mattresses come in?
Queen, King and Super King — there's no single, king single or double in coir. For firm support in those sizes, the firm range covers every size.
Do you deliver coir mattresses, or can I pick one up?
Both. Pick-up from our Brisbane (Rocklea) warehouse is available seven days a week, and delivery is free within 10 km* of our Rocklea warehouse on eligible items when you pay outright (not pay later), ground floor only — see our delivery details.
