Which Furniture Care Product Do You Need?
Choosing the right furniture care product starts with knowing your upholstery type. Use this guide to find the best match for your fabric sofa, leather lounge, or timber furniture.
Fabric Sofas & Lounges
Fabric upholstery is susceptible to liquid absorption and everyday staining. A fabric protector spray creates an invisible barrier that repels spills before they set. For existing marks, a fabric spot cleaner lifts residue without damaging fibres.
Best for: Fabric lounges, fabric dining chairs, ottomans, fabric bed heads.

Leather requires a two-step approach: cleaning to remove surface dirt and body oils, followed by conditioning to keep the leather supple and crack-resistant. In Queensland's subtropical climate, leather is especially prone to drying out without regular care.
Best for: Genuine leather lounges and leather recliners only. Not suitable for PU leather, nubuck, or suede.

Simple habits that protect your furniture investment — especially important in Australia's humid, sun-intensive climate.
Protect Before the First Spill
Apply a fabric protector to new upholstery before first use. Once a stain has set, protection is harder to achieve. Treat it like sunscreen — prevention is always easier than cure.
Blot, Don't Rub
When spills happen, blot immediately with a clean cloth — never scrub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes liquid deeper into the fibres. Work from the outside edge inward.
Vacuum Regularly
Dust and dirt act as abrasives against fabric fibres. A monthly vacuum with an upholstery attachment removes particle buildup before it causes premature wear.
Keep Out of Direct Sunlight
UV rays fade and dry out both fabric and leather. Position lounges away from direct sun, or use UV-filtering window treatments — especially important in Queensland's high-UV environment.
Reapply Protection Annually
Fabric protectors wear off over time, especially in high-use areas. Reapply every 12 months or after professional cleaning to maintain the invisible barrier against stains and moisture.
Furniture Care — Frequently Asked Questions
Expert answers to the most common questions about caring for fabric, leather, and upholstered furniture.
-
For fabric sofas and lounges in Australia, we recommend a two-product approach: a fabric protector spray applied to new or freshly cleaned upholstery, paired with a fabric spot cleaner for treating spills and everyday marks. Guardsman's Fabric Protector and Fabric Care Kit are designed specifically for upholstered furniture and are among the most trusted options used by Australian furniture retailers. The key is to apply protection before the first use — preventing stains is significantly easier than removing them.
-
Act quickly — the sooner you treat a spill, the better the result. Blot the area with a clean dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible without rubbing. Apply a dedicated fabric spot cleaner (like the Guardsman Fabric Care Kit) following the product instructions, and gently blot again. Avoid using home remedies like dish soap or baking soda on upholstery as these can leave residue or discolouration. Always test any cleaner on a hidden section of fabric first.
-
Most fabric protectors are effective for 12–24 months under normal household conditions. We recommend reapplying annually or after any professional cleaning, as the cleaning process can reduce the barrier effect. In households with children or pets, or where the sofa receives heavy daily use, consider reapplying every 6–12 months. The Guardsman 5-Year Warranty Kits include a full application of long-lasting protector as part of the warranty package.
-
Fabric care products should not be used on leather furniture — each material requires its own specific formulation. For genuine leather sofas and recliners, we stock the Guardsman Leather Care Kit, which includes a leather cleaner and leather conditioner designed to clean and protect finished leather. Please note that Guardsman leather care products are not suitable for PU leather, bonded leather, nubuck, or suede. Always check the upholstery label on your furniture before applying any care product, or contact our team if you're unsure of your leather type.
-
The Guardsman 5-Year Lounge Care Warranty Kit covers accidental stains and damage to your lounge suite for five years from the date of purchase. It includes a professional-grade fabric protector application pack, Guardsman's dedicated care products, and the warranty documentation. Kits are available for 2–4 seat lounges and 5–8 seat lounges. This is the same warranty plan offered by major Australian furniture retailers and provides one of the most comprehensive fabric protection guarantees available in Australia.

Yes. Fabric protector can be applied to any fabric-upholstered surface, including fabric dining chairs, fabric bed heads, ottomans, and fabric bed frames. For dining chairs especially, where food and drink spills are common, regular fabric protection is highly recommended. Always ensure the item is clean and dry before application, and test on a small hidden area first to confirm compatibility with the fabric type.
