Warm wood tones are the most reliable TV unit colour for a grey sofa: oak, honey or walnut with cool greys, and walnut or natural timber with warm greys. Pick white or black only when clearly lighter or darker than the sofa. The unit needn't match your coffee table; share one material or colour, or buy both from one range.
- If your floor is dark timber: skip a brown unit that nearly matches it and go light, like the Douglas TV Unit with its white glass top and chrome legs.
- If your floor is grey tile or vinyl: let the unit bring the warmth, like the Mildura TV Unit: a honey-toned wood-effect top over whitewashed doors, on gold hairpin legs.
- If you want a matching set: the Macleod TV Unit and Macleod Coffee Table share a marble-look top and oak-look frame.

TV unit colours for light, warm and charcoal grey sofas
Whether you call it a TV unit, a TV stand or an entertainment unit, it usually faces the sofa, so the two are seen together from almost everywhere in the room. Grey picks up the temperature of whatever sits near it, which is why the same sofa can look cold beside one unit and cosy beside another. Work out which grey you have first. If you're not sure, our guide to colours that go with a grey sofa has a quick daylight test.
| Your grey sofa | Works well | Go carefully with |
|---|---|---|
| Light or cool grey (reads blue or steely) | Oak, honey or walnut wood tones; black with gold | An all-cool mix of grey, icy white and chrome |
| Warm grey or greige (reads beige or taupe) | Walnut, natural timber, off-white with timber; black with brass or gold | Blue-grey finishes and a lot of chrome |
| Mid grey | Almost anything; let the floor decide | A unit in the same mid grey |
| Charcoal | White, wood-and-white, a light marble-look top | Black or dark brown, unless the walls and floor are light |
Light and cool greys need warmth, and wood adds it fastest. The Macleod TV Unit puts a marble-look top on an oak-look frame with tapered legs, and the Zulian TV Unit has a walnut wood-grain finish with brushed gold handles and splayed gold legs. You'll find more wood tones in our timber and wooden TV units. If you'd rather go black, choose one with a warm metal, like the Drome TV Unit: carved satin black fronts under a black tempered glass top, with two brushed gold accent plates.
Warm greys already lean beige, so echo that warmth rather than fight it. Walnut works here too, and so does natural timber with off-white: the Jericho TV Unit is solid acacia, with a natural top over an off-white painted body and small brass knobs.
Charcoal is dark enough that depth matters more than undertone, so a lighter unit stops the room feeling heavy. The Douglas TV Unit pairs a white tempered glass top and white-gloss drawers with polished chrome legs, and the Mildura TV Unit mixes a honey-toned top with paler whitewashed doors. Pieces in this guide
Should your TV unit match your coffee table?
No, it doesn't have to. What matters is that the two look as if they belong in the same room, and there are three ways to get there.
- Match exactly. Buy both from one range. It's the easiest route in a smaller lounge, where the pieces sit close together and anything slightly off shows.
- Coordinate. Repeat one or two things, such as the wood tone, the metal or the leg shape, and let the rest differ: gold legs on both pieces, say, or the same oak tone under a different top.
- Contrast on purpose. Let one piece be the statement and keep the other quiet. Two statement pieces facing each other across a rug usually compete.
If you want an exact match, these ranges carry the same finish across a TV unit and a coffee table:
| Range | Matching pieces | What they share |
|---|---|---|
| Macleod | TV unit, coffee table, end table | Marble-look top, oak-look frame, tapered legs |
| Mildura | TV unit, coffee table, end table | Honey-toned and whitewashed wood-effect, gold hairpin legs |
| Zulian | TV unit, coffee table, sideboard | Walnut wood-grain, brushed gold pulls, splayed gold legs |
| Drome | TV unit, coffee table, dining table | Carved satin black weave, black tempered glass, brushed gold |
| Douglas | TV unit, coffee table | White tempered glass and chrome |
| Delta Grey & Black | TV unit, coffee table | Cream-grey high gloss under dark tempered glass |
The Macleod Coffee Table is a good example of why a matched pair works with grey: its white marble-look top with soft grey veining picks up the sofa, while the oak-look body warms it. Once the pieces are in, our ideas for styling a TV unit and the wall around it cover what goes on top.
What colour TV unit goes with dark wood or grey floors?
Your floor is a bigger block of colour than the sofa, and the TV unit stands right on it. Check the floor before you settle on a finish.
- Dark timber floors. A brown unit that is close to the floor colour, but not the same, looks like a near miss. Go clearly lighter with white or wood-and-white, or choose black with a gold or chrome accent.
- Grey tiles, grey vinyl or polished concrete. With a grey sofa as well, the room is mostly grey, so the unit has to carry the warmth: oak-look, honey or walnut. A grey unit tends to disappear into the floor.
- Light timber boards. Don't try to match the boards exactly; contrast them instead, with walnut like the Zulian or black like the Drome.
- White or cream tiles. Almost any finish works. Wood stops a white-and-grey room from feeling clinical.
Legs help too. A unit on legs, like the Mildura's gold hairpins or the Zulian's splayed gold legs, lets the floor run underneath, so the two colours never meet in a hard line. A plinth base sits flush to the floor: the Jericho's off-white plinth draws a crisp edge against dark boards, which suits a contrast you want to show off.
Oak or oak-look? Read the finish first
Photos flatten finishes, so read the materials line on each product page before you match. Oak-look, wood-effect and marble-look mean an engineered surface: the Macleod is oak-coloured particle board under a marble-effect top, and the Zulian is MDF with a walnut wood-grain finish. Pieces in one range share that manufactured finish, so they line up closely, while solid timber such as the Jericho's acacia varies in grain, colour and knots from piece to piece. Our TV wall guide covers styling each finish. To see a finish in daylight, we have five showrooms, so ask which store has it on display and bring a cushion cover from your sofa.
Should a TV unit and sideboard match?
Only if you can see them together. In an open-plan room where the sideboard and TV unit share a wall or a sightline, use one range or at least one shared finish, or the space reads as two separate shopping trips. If the sideboard lives in a separate dining room, it only has to suit that room.
The Zulian Sideboard is the simplest way to do it: the same walnut wood-grain, brushed gold pill-shaped pulls and splayed gold legs as the Zulian TV Unit and coffee table, with two cabinet doors and three drawers. If you'd rather coordinate than match, browse our buffets and sideboards for one that repeats your TV unit's wood tone or metal.
The same thinking applies to a dining table in view of the TV. The Drome Dining Table has a black tempered glass top over satin black panels carved with the same geometric weave as the Drome TV Unit, finished with a brushed gold accent. If a full match feels like too much, repeat just the black glass or the gold.
Grey sofa and TV unit questions
What colour TV unit goes with a brown, beige or black couch?
Use the same rule as grey: make the unit clearly lighter or darker than the couch. A brown leather couch suits white, black or a much lighter oak-look finish. A beige couch suits walnut, or black with gold. A black couch suits oak-look, natural timber or white, so the room doesn't turn heavy.
Can you have a grey TV unit with a grey sofa?
Yes, if the unit brings a contrast of its own, because two flat greys tend to look tired together. The Delta Entertainment Unit Grey & Black works this way: a high-gloss cream-grey body under a dark tempered glass top, with a dark band between the two tiers.
Is a black TV unit too dark for a grey sofa?
Not with a light or mid grey sofa, where black gives the room an anchor. Pick one with a warm metal such as gold, so it doesn't feel cold. With a charcoal sofa, black works when the walls and floor are light; otherwise choose white or wood.
Which metal suits a grey sofa, gold or chrome?
Gold and brass warm up a cool grey and suit warm greys too. Chrome keeps a cool grey crisp and modern, so pair it with something warm, such as a timber floor or tan cushions. The Zulian and Mildura use gold-toned metal; the Douglas uses polished chrome.
What colour TV unit should I get if I'm not sure?
A mid-tone wood or wood-and-white finish is the most forgiving. It suits light, warm and charcoal greys, most floors and a change of sofa later. Then check the width against your screen with our TV unit size guide.
