A pod chair, also called an egg chair, is a rounded, partly enclosed seat you curl into. Outdoor versions hang from a beam, hang from their own stand, or sit on a fixed base. A model with its own stand needs no drilling, and weather-ready ones use synthetic wicker, a powder-coated frame and outdoor-fabric cushions.

Jimmy outdoor egg pod chair with a white woven shell and stand on a patio with plants

Hanging, on a stand or on a base: three kinds of pod chair

"Pod chair", "egg chair" and "hanging egg chair" are used almost interchangeably. What actually separates them is how the seat is held up, and that decides where you can put one.

  • Ceiling or beam-hung. The shell hangs on a chain or rope from a structural beam, a patio roof or a pergola. It looks the lightest, but it needs a fixing point that can carry the chair and the person in it, and once it is up it stays in that spot.
  • Hanging from its own stand. The shell hangs from a curved frame that sits on the ground. You get the gentle movement of a hanging chair with no drilling, and you can move it to follow the shade. This is the most practical choice for renters, balconies and anyone unsure about their ceiling.
  • Fixed base. The pod sits on legs or a round base and does not hang at all. It gives the same cocoon shape with no sway, which some people prefer.

Most backyards suit the stand-mounted type best. It goes anywhere with a level surface, and it can come inside the patio line when a storm rolls through.

What an outdoor pod chair should be made of

An outdoor pod chair has three parts that face the weather: the woven shell, the frame and the cushion. The shell is where cheaper chairs fail first, so it is worth knowing the difference between synthetic wicker and natural rattan.

Feature PE (synthetic) wicker Natural rattan
What it is Polyethylene strands woven to look like rattan A plant-based cane
Sun UV-stabilised, so it holds its colour and shape Dries out, fades and turns brittle
Rain and humidity Moisture-resistant Absorbs moisture and can grow mould
Upkeep Wipe with a damp cloth; no sealing or oiling Best kept indoors or fully covered
Best place Patios, decks and balconies Sunrooms and indoor corners

For the frame, look for powder-coated steel or aluminium. Aluminium cannot rust; powder-coated steel is rust-resistant as long as the coating stays intact, so touch up any deep chips. Either way, check the weight capacity on the product page and stay under it. Our guide to synthetic wicker vs natural rattan goes further into the shell. When you are comparing chairs, a matte wicker finish usually looks more like real cane than a shiny one.

Cushions and weather: water-resistant is not waterproof

The cushion is the part of a pod chair that needs the most care. Outdoor fabrics such as Olefin are made to resist UV, repel water and resist fading, but water-resistant is not the same as waterproof. After a heavy downpour the cushion can still hold moisture, and a cushion that stays damp is where mildew starts.

  • After rain: stand the cushion on its edge in the sun or a breezy spot until it is dry right through.
  • When it won't be used for a while: bring the cushion indoors.
  • In heavy weather: a breathable cover over the shell and frame helps. Avoid plastic sheeting, which traps condensation.
  • Cleaning: spot clean with mild soap and water, rinse well and let it dry fully before use.

A covered patio, verandah or balcony is the kindest spot for any outdoor cushion. Full sun and rain every day will shorten the life of even good outdoor fabric.

Hanging a pod chair from a beam: what to check

If you are set on a ceiling-hung chair, the installation matters more than the chair. Some sensible checks before you hang one:

  • Fix into structure, not lining. The anchor must go into a structural beam or joist, never into ceiling sheeting, a gutter or a light pergola batten.
  • Rate the hardware well above the load. The fixing, chain or rope and connectors should all be rated comfortably above the chair plus the heaviest person who will use it. Locking carabiners are safer than open S-hooks.
  • Ask a professional if you are unsure. A builder or licensed tradesperson can tell you whether a patio roof or pergola is designed to carry a moving load.
  • Leave room to swing. Keep the chair clear of walls, railings and windows, with space for it to move.
  • Inspect it regularly. Check the fixing, chain or rope and every connection for wear, and tighten anything loose.

If any of that sounds like more work than you want, a pod that hangs from its own stand avoids all of it.

The Jimmy: the pod chair we sell

We keep one pod chair in our range, and we would rather explain it properly than pad the page with styles we don't sell.

Jimmy Outdoor Egg Pod Chair with white PE wicker shell, light grey Olefin cushion and freestanding steel stand
The Jimmy Outdoor Egg Pod Chair: a PE wicker shell hanging from its own powder-coated steel stand.

The Jimmy Outdoor Egg Pod Chair is a freestanding hanging egg chair. The stand is included, so there is no ceiling fixing or anchor point; it needs only a level surface. Here is what it is made of:

  • Frame: 1.2mm powder-coated steel, rust-resistant.
  • Shell: PE (polyethylene) wicker, UV-stable and weather-resistant.
  • Cushion: Olefin fabric, UV-resistant and water-repellent.
  • Colour: a white frame with a light grey cushion.

It seats one, and it suits balconies, patios, garden decks and covered outdoor areas. Care is simple: wipe the wicker with a damp cloth and mild soap, and check the bolts, joints and hanging chain or spring now and then. Full dimensions are still being finalised, so ask our team for the exact footprint before you plan the space. You will find it in our egg and swing chairs collection.

Where a pod chair fits, and what to pair it with

A pod chair is a one-person seat, so it works best as a quiet corner alongside your main outdoor seating rather than as the whole setting.

  • The reading corner: a shaded end of the patio, with a small table within arm's reach for a drink and a book.
  • The balcony: a stand-mounted pod takes the place of a second armchair and gives a small space a focal point.
  • Next to the lounge: angle it towards the main seating so whoever is in it stays part of the conversation.
Portals 3 Seater Outdoor Lounge with black aluminium frame, charcoal Olefin cushions and built-in teak side table
The Portals 3 Seater Outdoor Lounge: a built-in teak side table at one end, and Olefin cushions like the Jimmy's.

For the main seating, the Portals 3 Seater Outdoor Lounge and the compact Portals 2 Seater Outdoor Lounge pair a black powder-coated aluminium frame with charcoal Olefin cushions and a built-in teak side table at one end. Teak naturally silvers to a soft grey outdoors, which sits well next to a white and grey pod.

Tagula 4 Piece Outdoor Sofa Set with black aluminium frame, two armchairs, two-seater sofa and eucalyptus coffee table
The Tagula 4 Piece Outdoor Sofa Set: a two-seater, two armchairs and a eucalyptus-topped coffee table.

If you are starting from an empty patio, a complete set is simpler. The Tagula 4 Piece Outdoor Sofa Set seats four, with a black aluminium frame, fire-retardant polyester cushions and a eucalyptus-topped coffee table. The Panama 4 Piece Outdoor Sofa Set seats five across a three-seater and two armchairs, in a dark charcoal aluminium frame with light grey cushions and a matching slatted coffee table. Add a pod chair to either and you have a reading seat as well as a lounge. Compare every setting in our outdoor lounges range.

We have five showrooms, at Rocklea, Virginia, North Ipswich, Bundall and Beenleigh. A pod chair is very much a sit-in-it-first piece, so ask which store has the Jimmy on display before you visit.

Outdoor pod chair FAQs

  • What is the difference between a pod chair and an egg chair?

Usually nothing. Both names describe a rounded, partly enclosed seat. What matters more is whether it hangs from a beam, hangs from its own stand, or sits on a fixed base.

  • Can an outdoor pod chair stay outside all year?

A PE wicker shell on a powder-coated frame can stay outdoors, ideally under cover and with a breathable cover in heavy weather. Bring the cushion indoors when the chair won't be used for a while.

  • How much weight does the Jimmy Outdoor Egg Pod Chair hold?

The Jimmy's product page lists a weight capacity of 120 kg. It seats one person.

  • Do hanging pod chairs need to be installed?

Ceiling-hung chairs need a fixing into a structural beam with suitably rated hardware. A pod that hangs from its own stand, like the Jimmy, needs no installation beyond assembling the stand on a level surface.

  • Is wicker OK for an outdoor chair?

Synthetic PE wicker is made for outdoor use and resists sun and moisture. Natural rattan dries out, fades and turns brittle outdoors, so it is better kept inside.

  • How do I clean an outdoor pod chair?

Wipe the wicker with a damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse and let it air dry. Spot clean the cushion the same way and let it dry fully. Avoid abrasive brushes and harsh chemicals.
