Pick one zone: dining set or lounge?
Buying a dining table, a lounge, a bar setting and a swing chair at once, each at the cheapest end, usually leaves you with four pieces that all feel a bit flimsy. Use these tests to decide which zone comes first:
- Choose dining first if your outdoor area is where meals, kids' lunches and barbecue nights happen. You need a stable table and chairs people can sit in for an hour.
- Choose a lounge first if you mostly have a coffee outside, read, or sit with friends after the barbecue. Comfort and cushion quality matter most here.

A simple test: if you would eat outside weekly but only host a crowd a few times a year, buy dining. If you rarely sit at a table outdoors, put the budget into a lounge.

Where to spend on budget outdoor furniture
1. The frame
The frame is the part you cannot fix later. Powder-coated aluminium is the material we point most budget buyers towards: it does not rust the way bare or poorly coated steel can, it is light enough to move when a storm is forecast, and it holds up to sun and rain. Almost every piece in our value picks below uses it.
2. The cushions
Cushions are where a cheap setting usually shows its age first. Look for outdoor fabrics such as olefin or polyester, covers that look tightly sewn, and foam that springs back when you press it. In humid weather, the ability to dry quickly after rain matters more than thickness.
3. The table top
Whether it is a coffee table or a dining table, the top takes spills, sunscreen and barbecue sauce. A surface you can wipe clean saves you weekends. Timber tops look warm but need some care: eucalyptus and teak turn silver-grey unless you oil them every 6 to 12 months. 4. Seat comfort

- Extra seats. If you host eight people twice a year, you do not need eight outdoor chairs year-round. Bring indoor chairs out, or add stacking chairs later.

When is the best time to buy outdoor furniture in Australia?
For the widest choice, buy in spring, before summer. For a lower price, look at the end of summer and the cooler months, when many Australian retailers discount outdoor furniture because fewer people are buying it.
These sale periods often include outdoor furniture:
- End-of-summer clearance. Around February and March, retailers often clear summer ranges to make room for new ones, but the most popular sets, sizes and colours may already be gone.
- The winter off-season, including EOFY. From June to August, demand for outdoor furniture is usually at its lowest, so retailers often run promotions, and end-of-financial-year sales in June often take in outdoor ranges. In South-East Queensland winter is mostly dry and mild, so a setting bought then still gets used.
- Black Friday in late November. It has become a major sale event in Australia, and it falls just before summer entertaining starts.
- Boxing Day. Post-Christmas sales often include outdoor furniture, with most of summer still ahead.
The practical trade-off is choice against price. Buy before summer and you get the full range and the whole season to use it. How to tell if an outdoor furniture sale is good value
A sale is only good value if the setting would have been worth buying anyway. Run the same checklist whatever the label says:
- Weather basics. What is the frame made of? Are the cushions an outdoor fabric? Can the table top be wiped clean?
- Fit. Does it fit your measured space with room to walk around it and pull chairs out? Can it get through your gate, doors or lift?
- Feel. Sit in it. If it feels flimsy or uncomfortable in a showroom, it will not improve on your patio.
- Care. Ask how to look after the frame, timber and cushions, and whether you have somewhere to store cushions in wet weather.

Wipe frames down with mild soapy water, keep timber clean, stand cushions on their edge to dry after rain and bring them inside during long wet spells or when a storm is forecast.
