Overview
A high-back dining chair built to outlast the table trends
The Dexter Chair pairs a tall, supportive backrest with a padded PU or fabric seat on solid rubberwood legs, sold per chair in three finishes — black PU, brown PU or grey fabric. At 106 cm overall it's noticeably taller through the back than most chairs in our range, while the 46 cm seat height keeps it sitting correctly under a standard 71–76 cm dining table. At $129 a chair you can seat a full table without compromising on back support, and if you'd rather skip the assembly, add it for $20 a chair and we'll build them on delivery.
Tall, Supportive Backrest
At 106 cm overall the Dexter's backrest sits well above shoulder height for most adults, giving proper upper-back support through a long dinner rather than trailing off partway up.
Padded Seat Over MDF Core
The seat is cushioned over an MDF core, so it holds its shape through everyday use instead of sagging into the frame.
Solid Rubberwood Legs
The legs are solid rubberwood — a dense plantation hardwood — giving a stable, wobble-free base that copes with being pulled out and pushed in daily.
Three Finishes
Black PU and brown PU wipe clean with a damp cloth — the practical pick for a busy household. The grey fabric option trades wipe-clean for a softer, warmer texture.
Will it fit?
Will it fit your table — and how many do you need?
Seat height is the number that decides whether a dining chair fits your table, and it's rarely published. The Dexter's 45 × 49 cm footprint and 46 cm seat height are printed here so you can check the fit before you buy — along with the maths on how many chairs your table actually needs.
- Check your table height first. Measure floor to tabletop. The rule is 25–30 cm between the seat and the table's underside for knee room. With a 46 cm seat, the Dexter sits in that band under any standard 71–76 cm Australian dining table, and its taller back still clears the underside of most tables — the backrest height doesn't affect table fit, only how much support you get.
- Count 60 cm of table edge per chair. At 45 cm wide the Dexter fits the standard spacing: a 110–120 cm table takes four, a 150 cm table takes four to six, and a 180–200 cm table seats six, or eight with the ends in use. Buying for a six-seater? You need six chairs — set the quantity above.
- No arms to catch the apron. The Dexter is armless, so it tucks fully under the table's edge rail between meals — worth knowing if your dining room is on the tighter side.
- Depth check for tight rooms. The chair is 49 cm deep, so pulled out for seating it needs roughly 90 cm of clear floor behind the table edge — the same clearance rule as the table itself.
Not sure? Measure your table height and call our showroom team on 07 3161 5415 — we'll check the fit against your table before you order, and you can try the Dexter in person in our showrooms.

Styling
What it pairs with
The Dexter's tall backrest reads more formal than a low-back chair, so it suits a table you want to look dressed for dinner. In black PU it sharpens up a timber table like the Dell or Dalby; brown PU leans warmer against walnut and acacia tones; the grey fabric softens a round table like the Daliya. Keep the palette to two colours — one for the table, one for the chairs — and let the Dexter's height do the rest of the work.
Materials & care
PU or fabric over a rubberwood frame
- Legs
- Solid rubberwood — a dense plantation hardwood
- Seat & back core
- MDF, padded seat and high backrest
- Black & brown
- PU (polyurethane) faux leather — not genuine leather
- Grey
- Woven fabric upholstery
- Warranty
- 1 year
PU is a faux leather: it gives the leather look at a fraction of the price and wipes clean easily, but it doesn't wear like genuine hide — keep it out of harsh sun and away from sharp edges and it will look right for years. Swatch colours on screen are approximate; we recommend seeing the finishes in a showroom before you buy.
Caring for your chairs
Wipe PU after meals
A damp cloth is all the black and brown PU needs — spills and fingerprints wipe straight off. Skip harsh solvents and abrasive scourers, which dull and crack PU over time.
Vacuum the grey fabric
Run the upholstery brush over the fabric seats weekly. Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth — rubbing pushes the spill into the weave instead of lifting it out.
Snug the bolts twice a year
Every dining chair loosens a little with daily use. A twice-yearly once-over with the supplied key keeps the frame tight and silent — especially on a taller back, which carries more leverage than a low-back chair.
Keep out of direct sun
Strong direct sunlight fades fabric and dries PU. Position away from harsh sun, or close curtains during the brightest hours.
What's in the box
Partially assembled — screwdriver required
Each Dexter chair arrives partially assembled: the upholstered seat and high back come made up, and you attach the legs with the included hardware. A screwdriver does the job; an electric drill makes it quicker. Count on a few minutes per chair — or add assembly above ($20 per chair) and our team will build every chair on delivery.

Delivery & pickup
Two ways to get them home
Delivery cost is calculated by item and distance — enter your details in the estimator above, or at checkout. Delivery is to ground level / front garage only. Chairs travel partially assembled in compact cartons (104 x 47 x 38 cm), so stairs and doorways are rarely a problem; add assembly above if you'd like them built on delivery.
Collect free from our Rocklea distribution warehouse by appointment. Chair cartons are compact — a set of four typically fits in a hatchback, six in a wagon or SUV. Bring your order confirmation and photo ID. For full terms, see our Pickup & Delivery Terms.
Change-of-mind returns are accepted under our Return Policy; full conditions apply.

FAQ
Common questions
Almost certainly, if your table is a standard height. The seat sits at 46 cm, which leaves the recommended 25–30 cm of knee room under any 71–76 cm Australian dining table. The chair is armless, so the whole chair tucks under between meals — the 106 cm backrest height affects support, not table fit.
One chair. Set the quantity to match your table — four for a 110–150 cm table, six for a 150–200 cm table. Ordering singles also means you can replace or add a chair later without buying a whole set.
No — it's PU (polyurethane) faux leather. It gives the leather look and wipes clean with a damp cloth, at a fraction of the price of genuine hide. If you'd prefer a soft woven finish instead, choose the grey fabric option.
PU (black or brown): wipe with a damp cloth after meals — avoid solvents and abrasive scourers. Grey fabric: vacuum weekly with the upholstery brush and blot spills immediately with a dry cloth rather than rubbing. Keep both finishes out of strong direct sunlight.
Yes — they arrive partially assembled and you attach the legs with the included hardware. A screwdriver does it; an electric drill is quicker. Or add assembly at checkout for $20 per chair and our team will build every chair on delivery — the assembly quantity automatically matches how many chairs you order.
A rated weight capacity isn't on our supplier spec sheet, so we won't quote a number we can't stand behind. The frame is solid rubberwood with an MDF seat and back core, built for everyday family dining. If capacity is a deciding factor for you, call us on 07 3161 5415 and we'll help before you order.
The Dexter has a deliberately high backrest — 106 cm overall, versus around 96 cm on our lower-back chairs. The seat height stays the same 46 cm, so table fit isn't affected; you simply get more upper-back support.
Full details
Dexter Dining Chair — full product details
The Dexter Chair is a high-back upholstered dining chair on solid rubberwood legs with a padded MDF-core seat and backrest, measuring 45 cm wide, 49 cm deep and 106 cm tall with a 46 cm seat height. It comes in three finishes — black PU, brown PU or grey fabric — and is sold per chair, so you can order exactly the number your table needs and add or replace chairs later.
The 46 cm seat height sits in the band Australian dining tables are designed around: under a standard 71–76 cm table it leaves the recommended 25–30 cm of knee room. At 45 cm wide it fits the standard 60 cm of table edge per diner — four chairs around a 110–150 cm table, six around a 150–200 cm table. The 106 cm overall height gives it the tallest backrest of A2Z's PU-and-fabric chair pair, and being armless it still tucks fully under the table between meals.
Each chair arrives partially assembled in a 104 x 47 x 38 cm carton; attach the legs with the included hardware using a screwdriver (an electric drill is quicker), or add in-home assembly for $20 per chair. It carries a 1-year warranty. Images are for illustration only; the actual product might be slightly different — we highly recommend you visit the store before the purchase. Pair it with the Dell, Dalby or Daliya Round dining tables, or browse all dining chairs. See it in person at any of our five A2Z Furniture showrooms: Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall (Gold Coast), North Ipswich and Beenleigh.
