The short version. A small electric motor, wired to a control board and a hand control, drives a linkage that moves the backrest and footrest together. Press a button and the motor runs; release it and the motor stops, parking the chair at that exact position. Electric recliners need mains power, but an external rechargeable battery pack — sold separately — lets you run the mechanism cord-free or through a power cut. There's no built-in backup battery in the chair itself.

The motor and gearbox

Every electric recliner has a small 12V-to-29V DC motor mounted underneath or behind the seat, usually bolted to the frame near the centre of the mechanism. The motor itself doesn't move the chair directly — it drives a worm-gear gearbox that converts the motor's fast rotation into slow, high-torque linear motion. That gearing is what lets a motor barely bigger than your fist smoothly lift the weight of a person reclining a heavy lounge. It's also what makes the movement self-locking: when the motor stops, the gearbox holds its position without drifting, which is why a recliner stays exactly where you release the button rather than sagging back down.

The gearbox output connects to a linear actuator — essentially a threaded rod that extends or retracts as the gearbox turns it. This actuator is the part physically pushing the recline mechanism open or closed.

The linkage — how backrest and footrest move together

Underneath the upholstery, an electric recliner has a metal linkage — a set of connected steel arms and pivot points, similar in principle to a manual recliner's mechanism but driven by the actuator instead of a hand lever. As the actuator extends, it pushes on the linkage, which simultaneously tilts the backrest and extends the footrest in one coordinated motion. This is the same "main recline" motion whether the chair is single motor or dual motor — one motor, one linkage, backrest and footrest moving together.

Because the motor can be stopped at any point in its travel, the chair can be parked anywhere between fully upright and fully reclined — not just open or closed, the way a manual lever mechanism typically is. That's the core advantage electric brings over manual: continuously-adjustable positioning without any physical effort from the sitter.

The hand control and control board

A small control board — usually mounted under the seat near the motor — receives the signal from the hand control (the wired button pad that sits beside the seat) and switches power to the motor accordingly. Press "open" and the board runs the motor forward; press "close" and it reverses; release the button and the board cuts power, and the self-locking gearbox holds the position. Most hand controls are simple two- or three-button units; some premium models add a soft-touch panel or, on dual-motor chairs, a second pair of buttons for the independent headrest motor.

The wiring between the control board, the hand control and the motor runs inside the frame and upholstery, which is why electric recliners need to stay near a power point — the whole system is designed as a sealed, low-voltage circuit rather than something you'd wire yourself.

Power supply and the battery pack accessory

Electric recliners plug into a standard household power outlet via a transformer that steps mains voltage down to the low DC voltage the motor and control board run on. That's the default setup, and it's how the vast majority of our electric recliners are used — plugged in, near a wall outlet, exactly like a lamp or a TV.

Important: our electric recliners don't have a built-in backup battery. If the power goes out, a mains-only electric recliner won't recline or return until power is restored.

For buyers who want to place the chair away from a power point, or who want the mechanism to keep working through a power cut, the fix is an external rechargeable battery pack — a separate accessory, sold apart from the chair, that plugs into the same low-voltage input the mains transformer normally uses. Charge the pack from any power outlet, then plug it into the chair; it runs the motor and control board exactly as mains power would, just without the cord. It's a genuinely useful accessory for a chair positioned away from a wall outlet, or as peace of mind if outages are a concern in your area — but it is an add-on you choose at purchase or afterward, not something built into every electric recliner by default. Ask in-showroom or check the product page for compatibility with your specific model.

USB charging and other electrics

Most electric recliners in our electric range also include a USB charging port built into the side panel or console, wired off the same low-voltage circuit as the motor — handy for charging a phone without a separate power board. Home theatre models in particular often add further electrics on the same circuit: LED-ringed cup holders, small tray-table lighting, and ambient lighting strips. All of these run off the chair's existing power connection, so they share the same "needs mains, or the optional battery pack" logic as the recline motor itself.

Single motor vs dual motor, briefly

Everything above describes the main recline motor, which every electric recliner has. Some models add a second motor dedicated solely to the headrest, letting you tilt it independently of the main recline angle — useful for long reclined viewing sessions where neck support matters. What can go wrong (and what to do about it)

Electric recliner mechanisms are reliable, but a few things do come up occasionally. If the chair won't move at all, check the power connection first — a knocked plug or a tripped power point is the most common cause by far. If the chair moves slowly or unevenly, it's usually nothing to worry about; motors can vary slightly in speed as they warm up. If you hear a new grinding or clicking noise, or the chair stalls mid-recline, stop using it and have it looked at rather than forcing the mechanism — forcing a binding mechanism is the most common cause of an otherwise-avoidable repair.   • Chair unresponsive: check the power point, the plug connection at the chair, and that the hand control cable is fully seated.
  • Chair stuck mid-recline: don't force it by hand; check power first, then contact us if power is fine and it still won't move.
  • Battery pack not powering the chair: confirm the pack itself is charged and that it's plugged into the correct low-voltage input, not a standard household socket.
