Quality Bedroom Storage, Built to Last
A well-chosen chest of drawers or tallboy does more than hold clothes — it anchors the room, keeps everyday essentials within easy reach, and quietly lifts the look of the bedroom. Our range is curated for Australian homes, combining considered design, solid construction and finishes that wear well over time — chosen for drawer-glide quality, sturdy framing and surfaces that hold up to daily use, whether you're outfitting a compact Brisbane apartment, a Gold Coast family home or a coastal build across South-East Queensland.
Tallboy or Chest of Drawers?
The terms get used interchangeably, but they're genuinely different pieces. Here's how we describe them in the showroom:
How to Choose the Right Size for Your Room
Compact bedrooms & apartments
If floor space is tight, a slim tallboy is almost always the smarter choice — look for widths around 60–80 cm and prioritise vertical drawer storage. Leave at least 70 cm of clearance in front so drawers open fully without hitting a bed, door or bedside table.
Standard main bedrooms
A 5- or 6-drawer chest around 90–110 cm wide gives generous storage without dominating the room. It's the most popular configuration we sell, and pairs naturally with a queen or king wooden bed frame.
Master suites & larger rooms
For bigger spaces, consider a wide 6-drawer chest, or pair a tallboy with a matching chest for a built-in feel. This works especially well in a coordinated queen bedroom suite or king bedroom suite.
Materials & Construction: What Actually Matters
Not all chests are built equally, and the difference usually shows up after a year or two of daily use. When comparing pieces, these details are worth checking:
Solid timber vs engineered wood
Solid timber (oak, acacia, pine, mango, mindi) offers the best long-term durability and ages with character — browse our dedicated wooden tallboys for natural-timber options. Quality engineered wood with a veneer finish is lighter and more affordable and can still look excellent — just check the carcass is structurally sound and the drawer bases are thick enough not to sag.
Drawer runners
Metal ball-bearing runners or soft-close mechanisms are a clear quality indicator. Wooden runners suit heritage-style pieces but tend to wear faster under daily use.
Dovetail & box joinery
Dovetail or properly box-joined drawers show the maker has invested in the build. Stapled corners are a shortcut — fine for occasional use, less reliable long-term.
How Many Drawers Do You Actually Need?
A useful rule of thumb: count the categories of things you fold — t-shirts, jumpers, jeans, activewear, underwear, socks, sleepwear — and aim for one drawer per two categories. For most adults that's 5–6 drawers; couples sharing a single chest usually want 6–7; kids' rooms and guest rooms are well served by a compact 3- or 4-drawer unit.
Measuring, Delivery & Care
Before you buy
Measure the wall width, the ceiling height (for taller tallboys) and the clearance for drawers to open fully. Check doorways, stairwells and lift access too — a tall chest that won't fit through the front door is a common and avoidable headache.
Delivery across South-East Queensland
Free local delivery is available within roughly 10 km of our Rocklea warehouse, with paid delivery to the wider Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba regions. You're welcome to see finishes in person first at our Rocklea, North Ipswich, Beenleigh, Sandgate or Bundall showrooms. Full terms are on our delivery & pickup page.
Caring for your chest of drawers
Dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth and keep the piece out of strong afternoon sun, which can fade timber finishes over time. For timber surfaces, a light furniture wax or conditioner every six months keeps the finish even.
Chest of Drawers & Tallboy FAQs
What's the difference between a tallboy and a chest of drawers?
A tallboy is taller and narrower, with drawers stacked vertically to save floor space; a chest of drawers is typically wider and shorter. Both store folded clothing and bedroom essentials — a tallboy suits smaller rooms, a chest works better where you have more wall space.
How tall is a standard tallboy in Australia?
Most Australian tallboys sit between 110 and 140 cm tall, with widths of roughly 60–85 cm. Taller 7-drawer designs can reach around 150 cm, so check the listed dimensions against your ceiling and any artwork you plan to hang above it.
Can a chest of drawers be used outside the bedroom?
Yes. A well-made chest works in a hallway as a console, in a living room for media storage, in a nursery for clothing and linens, or in a dining space for tableware.
Are your chests of drawers assembled on delivery?
It varies by product — each listing specifies whether the item arrives assembled or flat-packed for home assembly. If you'd prefer a pre-assembled option, ask our team on 1300 781 990 and we'll point you to the right pieces.
How do I stop a tall chest of drawers from tipping?
Many of our tallboys include a wall-anchor kit, and we strongly recommend using it — especially in homes with children. Wall anchoring takes about ten minutes, protects the piece from tipping when drawers are open, and doesn't damage the chest.
What's the best timber finish for Australian conditions?
Sealed hardwoods like oak and acacia handle humidity well, which matters in coastal and subtropical areas. Matte and satin finishes hide minor wear better than high-gloss — and keep any timber piece out of direct sun to prevent uneven fading.
