Choosing the Right Pocket Spring Mattress
"Pocket spring" describes the support system, not the whole mattress — individually-wrapped coils that work independently rather than as one connected unit. It's the foundation under much of our range; the mattress you actually choose is that support system plus a comfort layer, a zoning pattern and a cover fabric. This guide walks through each so you can tune all three to how you sleep — including who a pocket spring isn't the best fit for.
Who a pocket spring mattress suits best
- Couples and restless sleepers: independently-wrapped coils absorb movement locally, so one person turning over barely carries across the bed.
- Warm sleepers: air moves freely through a sprung core in a way it can't through solid foam — the most naturally breathable construction we stock, which counts on a humid Brisbane or Gold Coast night.
- Anyone wanting responsive support: the coils push back and adjust as you move, rather than holding a slow impression — a supportive, "on top of the bed" feel.
- Back and pressure-point sleepers (zoned models): zoned coil firmness gives targeted support under the lumbar and hips for spinal alignment — more on this below.
…and who might prefer a different type
Honest steer: if what you really want is a deep, moulded "cradled" surface — the slow contour that hugs your shape — a pocket spring on its own won't give you that as strongly. You'd be better looking at our memory foam range (which is built on a pocket-spring base with a memory-foam comfort layer — the contour version of the same support system). And if budget is the priority over coil independence, a connected-coil Bonnell spring is the cheaper entry point — firmer and less contouring, but less per dollar. We'd rather route you to the right build than oversell this one.
How to choose within the range
Every mattress here shares the individually-wrapped pocket-spring support core. Three things on top of that shape how it feels:
- Comfort layer: high-density foam gives the classic responsive pocket-spring feel; memory foam adds contour and pressure relief; gel-infused memory foam does the same while sleeping cooler; latex adds a springy, breathable bounce. The comfort layer is the single biggest driver of how a pocket spring feels.
- Zoning — standard, 3-zone or 5-zone: zoned models vary the coil firmness along the mattress so different parts of your body get different support. A 3-zone targets the main regions (shoulders, lumbar/hips, legs); a 5-zone is more granular for finer spinal alignment. Standard (un-zoned) gives even support throughout — simpler, and fine for many sleepers.
- Cover fabric: cotton and polyester are durable everyday covers; bamboo and Tencel are more breathable and moisture-wicking — a sensible upgrade for warm, humid South-East Queensland sleeping.
Pocket spring and Queensland heat — the honest bit
This is a genuine strength worth being straight about. Of all the constructions we stock, a pocket spring breathes best — air circulates through the open coil core instead of being trapped in a foam slab. On a humid Brisbane or Gold Coast night that's a real, felt difference. Pair it with a bamboo or Tencel cover and, if you've chosen a memory-foam comfort layer, a gel-infused one, and you've handled heat about as well as a mattress can.
Firmness
Firmness depends mostly on the comfort layer and the coil gauge. The simplest rule is sleeping position: side sleepers generally do better on something softer so the shoulder and hip can sink; back and stomach sleepers generally need firmer support to keep the spine in line.
- PlushA softer comfort layer over the coils — suits side sleepers and lighter builds. See our soft & plush range.
- MediumBalanced support and give — the broadest-appeal pocket-spring feel. See medium firm.
- FirmA thinner comfort layer with the coils more present — suits back and stomach sleepers and heavier builds. See our firm range.
- Extra firmMinimal give, maximum support. See extra firm.
Shop pocket spring by size
Pocket spring support is available across every size we stock. Once the construction is right, choose your size — each size collection shows the pocket-spring options in it, with size-specific pricing:
- Single & king single — kids' rooms, guest rooms, teens and solo sleepers.
- Double — solo adults wanting room, or couples in a compact bedroom.
- Queen & king — the standard and premium couples sizes.
- Super king — the largest standard size for big master bedrooms.
Why buy your pocket spring mattress from A2Z
The A2Z Furniture is a family-run Australian business established in 2013. A pocket spring's feel changes a lot with the comfort layer and zoning, so trying it matters: instead of guessing from a screen and waiting out a trial period, you lie on the actual mattress first, across five South-East Queensland showrooms — Rocklea, Sandgate, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh. Buying from our own Brisbane warehouse rather than a reseller keeps the price clear of a retail margin. Stock is held with pick-up seven days a week, plus Free Local Delivery on eligible orders from Rocklea. Every mattress carries a manufacturer's warranty (from 12 months, with longer periods on premium models) — see our warranty policy — and you can spread the cost interest-free with Afterpay, Zip, Humm and Latitude. Verified customer reviews are shown on each product to help you compare. Prefer to talk it through? Call our team on 1300 781 990.
Pocket Spring Mattress FAQs
What is a pocket spring mattress?
A mattress whose support core is hundreds of coils each wrapped in its own fabric pocket, so they compress independently rather than as one connected unit. That gives responsive support, low motion transfer between sleepers, and good airflow. For a deeper explainer see our pocket spring guide.
Are pocket spring mattresses good for couples?
They're one of the best constructions for it. Because each coil moves on its own, one person turning over stays largely local instead of carrying across the bed, so partner disturbance is low — particularly on higher coil-count and zoned models.
What do "3 zone" and "5 zone" mean?
Zoning varies the coil firmness along the length of the mattress so different parts of your body get different support. A 3-zone targets the main regions (shoulders, lumbar/hips, legs); a 5-zone splits it more finely for closer spinal alignment. A standard un-zoned mattress supports evenly throughout — simpler, and a good fit for many sleepers.
Pocket spring or memory foam — which should I choose?
Both are built on a pocket-spring base — the difference is the surface. Choose pocket spring (with a high-density-foam or latex comfort layer) for a responsive, breathable, "on top" feel. Choose memory foam if you want a deep, moulded contour — that collection is the memory-foam-comfort cut of the same sprung range. Lying on each in the showroom is the surest way to tell.
How much does a pocket spring mattress cost at A2Z?
Pocket spring starts from around $185 for a single, rising with the comfort layer, zoning, cover fabric and size. The product grid above shows current pricing. Interest-free payment is available through Afterpay, Zip, Humm and Latitude.
What sizes do pocket spring mattresses come in?
Every size we stock: single, king single, double, queen, king and super king. Each size collection shows the pocket-spring options in that size with size-specific pricing.
Do you deliver pocket spring mattresses, or can I pick one up?
Both. Stock is held in our Brisbane (Rocklea) warehouse with pick-up seven days a week, and Free Local Delivery is available on eligible orders from Rocklea — see our delivery details. The team can advise which models ship boxed for easier transport.
