Why a modular or sectional sofa works so well in Queensland homes
A modular sofa — or sectional sofa — is built from independent sections: armless seats, corner units, chaise pieces and ottomans that connect to form a single lounge. Instead of being locked into one shape, you choose a layout that suits your room today, rearrange it whenever you like, and add sections as your household grows.
For South-East Queensland homes, that flexibility is the point. Open-plan living areas, alfresco-flow layouts and growing families don't always sit comfortably with a fixed three-seater. A modular or sectional lounge lets you stretch a chaise across a living zone, tuck a corner into an apartment nook, or split the sections into two seating areas when you're entertaining — and reshape it all again when you move.
How to choose your modular or sectional sofa
1. Modular, sectional or corner?
"Modular" and "sectional" describe the same idea — a lounge built from separate sections you combine and rearrange. A sectional is usually a pre-shaped set of two or three pieces that bolt into an L or U; a modular goes a step further, with individual modules you can reconfigure repeatedly and add to over time. Both live in this collection. A corner sofa is the different one — a single fixed L-shape you can't rearrange. If your floor plan is settled and you want one cohesive shape, browse our corner and chaise sofas instead.
2. Your configuration
Once you've settled on a modular or sectional lounge, the layout is the next decision:
- L-shaped layout — the most popular in Australia: a long seating run with a chaise at one end. With a modular design you choose which side the chaise sits on, and change it later.
- U-shaped layout — chaise extensions either side of a central bank; generous for families and larger open-plan rooms.
- With built-in recliners — sections that recline electrically or manually, for the flexibility of modular plus recliner comfort. See our recliner sofa range.
- Modular sofa bed with storage — a pull-out sleeper plus hidden storage under the chaise. See our sofa beds and futons.
3. Fabric or PU leather?
Fabric is the default for most Queensland families — softer in summer, more breathable in humid months, and modern weaves are tough; most of our fabric sofas are stain-resistant and easy to spot-clean. PU leather wipes clean in seconds, which suits households with toddlers, teenagers or pets, and looks sharper and feels cooler — though it's less breathable in afternoon sun. Browse our faux leather sofas for the full PU range, and keep the matching care kit from our furniture care range on hand from day one.

- You don't plan to rearrange the layout
- You're set on a specific left or right chaise side
How to size a modular or sectional sofa for your room
The most common modular sofa regret is buying one too large for the room. Before you fall in love with a layout, take five minutes to measure. Start with your wall length and the depth of the lounge zone — most modular sofas need at least 90–100 cm of clear floor in front for foot traffic, and another 30–40 cm behind if it's floating in the middle of the room. Then check the delivery path: front door width, corridor turns, lift dimensions, stair landings. Because modular and sectional sections arrive separately, they fit through doorways that defeat a single-frame three-seater — but you still need to measure.
For a small apartment or unit, a 2.4–2.8 m L-shape with a single chaise is usually plenty. For a typical family home, 3.0–3.5 m suits most floor plans. Larger open-plan rooms can carry a full U-shape over 3.5 m — just leave space for a coffee table and rug so the lounge doesn't feel crowded. Our coffee table range has options sized to suit each footprint. If you're unsure, bring photos and rough measurements into a showroom and our team will walk you through which configurations fit.

Modular & sectional sofa FAQs
-
What's the difference between a modular sofa and a sectional sofa?
They describe the same idea — a lounge built from separate sections you combine and rearrange. "Sectional" usually means a pre-shaped set of two or three pieces that bolt into an L or U; "modular" goes further, with individual modules you can reconfigure repeatedly and add to over time. Both are in this collection. A corner sofa is the different one — it's a single fixed L-shape that can't be rearranged.
-
Can I rearrange my modular sofa once it's set up?
Yes — that's the whole point. Most modular and sectional lounges in our range use connector clips or brackets that release without tools, so you can swap a chaise from left to right, push the sections into a U-shape for movie nights, or split them apart to create two seating zones. The exact mechanism varies by model — our showroom team can demonstrate how each one works before you buy.
-
Can I add to a modular sofa later?
One of the biggest advantages of a modular or sectional design is that it can grow with you. Where a model is part of an ongoing range, you can often add compatible sections later — an extra seat, a chaise or an ottoman — to extend the lounge as your household or floor plan changes. Availability depends on the model and current stock, so check with our team for the specific range you're considering.
-
What size modular sofa is right for my living room?
For a typical apartment or compact lounge, a 2.4–2.8 m L-shape with a single chaise usually fits comfortably. For a family living room, 3.0–3.5 m suits most floor plans. Larger open-plan spaces can carry a full U-shape over 3.5 m without crowding. Always measure your lounge zone, doorways and delivery path first — and bring photos into the showroom so we can recommend the right configuration.
-
Are modular sofas suitable for families with kids and pets?
Modular and sectional sofas are one of the best formats for busy households. Many models use stain-resistant fabrics or wipe-clean PU leather, and because the sections are independent, you can replace a single damaged section in future rather than the whole lounge. Mid-tone fabrics (grey, charcoal, taupe) tend to hide everyday wear better than pale colours.
-
