Buying Guide
How to Choose the Right Bar Stool
Choosing a bar stool comes down to three things: the height of your bench, the material that suits your home, and the number of stools your space can comfortably hold. Our team has been fitting stools into Australian kitchens for years, and the rule we keep coming back to is simple — measure first, then style.
For a standard Australian kitchen bench of 90 cm, a seat height of around 65 cm gives you the ideal 25–30 cm of legroom. For a taller 100–110 cm home bar or pub table, step up to a 75 cm bar-height stool. If your bench height is unusual or you want flexibility, an adjustable gas-lift stool is the safest choice.
On spacing, allow at least 15–20 cm between each stool so elbows don't compete at breakfast. As a quick rule of thumb, a 180 cm island comfortably fits three stools, and a 240 cm island fits four.
Materials
Finding the Right Finish
Material shapes both the feel of a stool and how it ages. Here's how the most popular finishes in our range compare.
Velvet Bar Stools
Soft, tactile and quietly luxurious. Velvet stools bring warmth to a cool kitchen palette and pair beautifully with black, brass or marble. Best suited to indoor, lower-traffic spaces.
Leather Bar Stools
Timeless and hard-wearing. Our leather bar stools develop character over time and wipe clean easily — a strong choice for busy family kitchens and open-plan entertainers.
Timber & Metal
For a more structured, architectural look, timber and powder-coated metal frames bring quiet contrast. They sit naturally alongside our wooden dining tables and industrial-style kitchens.
Styling
Designing a Considered Kitchen Island
Bar stools are as much about proportion as they are about comfort. A few small decisions lift the whole space.
- Echo a material already in the room — the timber of a dining table, the brass of a pendant, or the fabric of a nearby armchair — so stools feel connected, not added.
- Choose backless stools to keep sightlines clean on smaller islands, and stools with backrests where comfort matters for longer meals.
- Keep upholstery tones one or two shades darker than your benchtop for a grounded, premium finish.
- For open-plan homes, coordinate with your dining chairs rather than matching them exactly — tonal families read more elegantly than identical pairs.
- Add a swivel or gas-lift mechanism if your stools double as a casual workspace.
FAQs
Bar Stool Questions, Answered
What size bar stool do I need for a 90 cm kitchen bench?
For a standard Australian 90 cm kitchen bench, look for a stool with a seat height of around 65 cm. This gives you 25–30 cm of legroom, which is the comfort range most people prefer for dining and working at the counter.
What's the difference between a counter stool and a bar stool?
Counter stools sit at roughly 65 cm and are designed for standard 90 cm kitchen benches. Bar stools sit higher at around 75 cm and are made for taller home bars or pub-style tables between 100 and 110 cm. The name matters less than matching the seat height to your bench height.
How many bar stools fit along a kitchen island?
Allow 60–70 cm of bench width per stool so elbows don't compete. As a general guide, a 180 cm island fits three stools, a 240 cm island fits four, and anything shorter than 120 cm is best with two.
Are adjustable gas-lift bar stools a good choice?
They're an excellent option if your bench height is non-standard, if you plan to move between a counter and a higher bar area, or if multiple people of different heights use the stool regularly. The flexibility is genuinely useful day to day.
Which bar stool material is most practical for a family kitchen?
Leather and PU leather are the most forgiving finishes for busy kitchens — they wipe clean quickly and age well. Velvet and fabric stools bring more warmth and texture but are better suited to adult-focused spaces where spills are less likely.
