Hamptons style takes its cues from the relaxed, beach-house homes of Long Island's East End — whitewashed and driftwood-toned timbers, soft coastal neutrals, panelled detailing and a deliberately unfussy, lived-in elegance. It's one of the most requested looks across our South-East Queensland showrooms, and one of the easiest to get right once you understand the handful of moves that make a room read as "Hamptons" rather than just "white and beige." What is Hamptons style?
The Hamptons — the string of seaside towns on New York's Long Island — became a byword for a particular kind of relaxed coastal luxury: shingle-clad houses, wide verandahs, and interiors built around light timber, white panelling and soft, breathable fabrics. As an interior design style, "Hamptons" borrowed those cues and turned them into a recognisable furniture language that's now hugely popular in Australian homes, especially in coastal and near-coastal South-East Queensland where the light-filled, easy-breezy feel suits the climate as well as it suits Long Island.
Done well, Hamptons furniture reads as classic rather than trend-driven — which is part of why it's held its popularity for so long. It pairs a fairly restrained colour and material palette with details (panelling, turned or tapered legs, brass or nickel hardware) that add texture without adding visual noise.
The Hamptons palette & materials
Three material and colour choices do most of the work in a Hamptons room:
- Whitewashed or driftwood timber tones. Light, slightly grey-washed timber finishes rather than dark stains or high-gloss lacquers — this is the single biggest visual signal of the style.

Styling tips for a Hamptons look
- Keep the timber tone consistent within a room. Mixing a whitewashed bed with a dark-stained bedside table breaks the coastal read — stick to matching or closely-toned finishes for the main furniture pieces in a room.
- Use navy or seagrass green sparingly. One accent colour — a cushion, a lamp, an occasional chair — goes further than painting a whole feature wall.
- Let panelling do the texture work. Because the palette is restrained, the panelled detailing on beds, TV units and dressers is doing most of the visual interest — don't compete with it using busy patterns elsewhere.
- Layer in natural texture. Woven or rattan-style dining chairs, linen-look cushions and light timber all reinforce the coastal feel without adding colour.
