Why a Modular Sofa Works So Well in Queensland Homes
A modular sofa is built from independent sections — armless seats, corner units, chaise pieces and ottomans — that connect together to form a single lounge. Instead of being locked into one shape forever, you choose a layout that suits your room today and rearrange it as your home, family or floor plan changes.
For South East Queensland homes, that flexibility is exactly the point. Our open-plan living areas, alfresco-flow layouts and growing families don't always sit comfortably with a fixed three-seater. A modular lounge lets you stretch a chaise across a lounge zone, pull a corner into an apartment nook, or split modules into two seating areas when you're entertaining.

Modular, Sectional or Corner Sofa — What's the Difference?
The terms get used interchangeably, but they describe three different things. A corner sofa arrives as one fixed piece in an L-shape — the chaise is on a permanent left or right side and can't be moved. A sectional sofa ships as two or three pre-shaped pieces that bolt together to form a single L or U layout. A true modular sofa is built from individual modules that can be rearranged repeatedly — the chaise from the left side today can sit on the right next year, or detach as a stand-alone seat in another room.
Which one is right for you depends on how settled your space is. If your floor plan is final and you love the look of one cohesive piece, a corner or sectional is easier to style. If you rent, plan to move, or know your living room will change as kids grow, a modular sofa keeps every option on the table without locking you in.
Many of the lounges in this collection blend formats — for example, modular sofas with built-in recliner sections, or modular sofa beds with pull-out chaises and storage. If you want to compare formats side by side, our corner and chaise sofas sit alongside our modular range in every showroom.
Modular Sofa Configurations Explained
Once you've decided on a modular lounge, the next decision is the layout. Here's how to think about each option in plain language.
L-shape with chaise
The most popular configuration in Australia. A long seating run with a chaise extending at one end, perfect for stretching out after work or a movie night. You'll specify a left-when-sitting or right-when-sitting chaise — choose based on where your TV, window or main walkway is.
U-shape
Two chaise extensions either side of a central seating bank. Generous for families with three or four people watching TV together, and ideal for larger open-plan living rooms where the sofa needs to anchor the space and create a clear lounge zone.
Modular with built-in recliners
If at least one person in the household lives in their recliner, look for modular layouts where one or more seats recline electrically or manually. You get the flexibility of separate modules with the comfort of a recliner sofa — the best of both formats. Browse our full recliner sofa range if reclining is the priority.
Modular sofa bed with storage
For apartments, studies that double as guest rooms, and homes that host visiting family, a modular sofa bed adds a pull-out sleeper plus hidden storage under the chaise — without giving up the everyday comfort of a normal lounge. See our sofa beds and futons for dedicated sleeper options.

Choosing Between Fabric and PU Leather
Upholstery is the second-biggest decision after configuration, and it's worth taking seriously — fabric is the surface you'll touch every day for the next decade.
Fabric modular sofas
Fabric is the default choice for most Queensland families. It's softer to sit on in summer, breathes better in our humid months, and modern weaves are surprisingly tough — most of our fabric ranges are stain-resistant and easy to spot-clean. Light fabrics show wear sooner; mid-tones (grey, charcoal, taupe) tend to age the best for households with kids and pets.
PU leather modular sofas
PU leather wipes clean in seconds, which is why it's a strong pick for households with toddlers, teenagers or four-legged residents. It looks sharper and more formal than fabric, and feels cooler to the touch. The trade-off is that PU isn't as breathable in summer — if your living room sits in afternoon sun without aircon, fabric is usually the more comfortable long-term choice.
Whichever you choose, it's worth keeping a bottle of the correct care product on hand from day one. Browse our furniture care range for fabric and leather-specific kits matched to your sofa type.

How to Size a Modular Sofa for Your Living Room
The most common modular sofa regret is buying one too large for the room. Before you fall in love with a layout, take five minutes to measure.
Start with your wall length and the depth of the lounge zone — most modular sofas need at least 90–100cm of clear floor in front for foot traffic, and another 30–40cm behind if it's floating in the middle of the room rather than against a wall. Then check your delivery path: front door width, corridor turns, lift dimensions, stair landings. The advantage of modular construction is that pieces arrive separately, so they fit through doorways that defeat a single-frame three-seater — but you still need to measure.
For a small Queensland apartment or unit, a 2.4m–2.8m L-shape with a single chaise is usually plenty. For a typical family home in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich or Logan, a 3.0m–3.5m L-shape or compact U-shape suits most floor plans. For larger open-plan rooms, you can go beyond 3.5m or step up to a full U-shape — but always leave space for a coffee table and rug to stop the lounge feeling crowded. Our coffee table range has options sized to suit each modular footprint.
If you're unsure, take photos and rough measurements into one of our showrooms. Our team can walk you through which configurations fit, which to avoid, and what the lounge will actually feel like at home.

Modular Sofa FAQs
-
What's the difference between a modular sofa and a sectional sofa?
A sectional sofa is sold as two or three pre-shaped pieces that bolt together into a fixed L or U layout. A modular sofa is built from independent modules — armless seats, corner pieces, chaise units and ottomans — that you can rearrange repeatedly without disassembling the frame. Modular gives you long-term flexibility; sectional gives you a single, cohesive look once it's in place.
-
Can I rearrange my modular sofa once it's set up?
Yes — that's the whole point. Most modular lounges in our range use connector clips or brackets that release without tools, so you can swap a chaise from left to right, push the modules into a U-shape for movie nights, or split them apart to create two seating zones for entertaining. The exact mechanism varies by model — our showroom team can demonstrate how each one works before you buy.
-
What size modular sofa is right for my living room?
For a typical apartment or compact lounge, a 2.4m–2.8m L-shape with a single chaise usually fits comfortably. For a family living room in a standard Brisbane, Gold Coast or Ipswich home, 3.0m–3.5m suits most floor plans. Larger open-plan spaces can carry a full U-shape over 3.5m without crowding. Always measure your lounge zone, doorways and delivery path first — and bring photos into the showroom so we can recommend the right configuration.
-
Are modular sofas suitable for families with kids and pets?
Modular sofas are one of the best formats for busy households. Many models in our range use stain-resistant fabrics or wipe-clean PU leather, and because the modules are independent, you can replace a single damaged section in future rather than the whole lounge. Mid-tone fabrics (grey, charcoal, taupe) tend to hide everyday wear better than pale colours. Pair the sofa with the matching care kit from our furniture care collection to keep it looking sharp.
