Buying Guides — Showroom Shopping
A mattress feels completely different in a showroom than it looks online, which is exactly why an in-person test matters. Before you browse our full mattress range, here's what to actually check while you're lying on the floor model — from spinal alignment to edge support — so you walk out with the right mattress the first time.
Work out your priorities before you arrive
Before stepping into one of our showrooms, take a few minutes to think through what you actually need. Your usual sleeping position, any specific comfort concerns, the mattress size you need, and your budget will all narrow the field before a single salesperson says a word. Knowing these upfront means you can spend your showroom time testing, not browsing.

Test different mattress types and firmness tiers
Our showrooms let you try pocket spring, memory foam, latex and Bonnell spring builds side by side, across our Soft & Plush, Medium Firm, Firm and Extra Firm tiers. Firmness is a feel set by spring wire gauge and comfort-layer density, not a fixed property of one construction type — so the same "medium" label can feel different from one mattress brand to the next. That's the single biggest reason to test in person rather than order on spec alone: firmness ratings vary between manufacturers, and 10 minutes lying on the actual mattress tells you more than any product description.
Spend real time on each mattress you're considering. Lie in your normal sleeping position for a few minutes rather than a quick sit-and-press, and pay attention to how your body settles rather than how the mattress looks or feels in the first five seconds.

Check support and spinal alignment
A mattress should keep your spine in a straight, neutral line regardless of which position you sleep in. Lie down and check for excessive sinking at the hips or pressure building at the shoulders — both are signs the firmness tier is wrong for your build and sleeping position, not that the mattress is faulty. As a general guide, side sleepers are usually best suited to Soft & Plush, most back sleepers to Medium Firm (heavier back sleepers often prefer Firm), stomach sleepers to Firm, and combination sleepers or couples to Medium Firm. Heavier builds typically need one tier firmer than position alone would suggest.
Consider motion isolation
If you share a bed, motion isolation is worth testing before anything else. Ask your partner to move or change position while you lie still, and notice how much of that movement transfers to your side. Pocket spring mattresses, where each coil responds independently, are generally strong performers here compared with a Bonnell spring build, where the coils are linked and movement travels further across the mattress.

Check edge support
Edge support is how well a mattress holds its shape when you sit or lie near the outer edge, rather than sagging or rolling you toward the centre. Sit on the edge of the floor model and lean your weight into it — a mattress with good edge support stays firm and usable right to the perimeter, which matters if you tend to sit on the bed to dress or share the mattress with a partner. In our range, models like Posture Rest, Ice Posture Rest and Tencel Ortho Rest are worth testing specifically for this.
Evaluate temperature regulation
If you sleep hot or live somewhere warm — which covers most of South-East Queensland for a good chunk of the year — temperature regulation deserves its own test in-store. Look for breathable covers, cooling gel-infused foam layers or open-cell structures that let air move through the mattress rather than trap it. Models such as Ice Posture Rest, GRC 01 and Spine Support are built with enhanced airflow in mind, and our staff can talk you through the difference in-store.
Visiting a showroom is the single most reliable step in finding the right mattress. Work through your priorities, test more than one construction type, check spinal alignment, motion isolation, edge support and temperature regulation, and ask our team about warranty and delivery before you decide. We're a family-run Australian business with five South-East Queensland showrooms — Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh — and stock held in our own Brisbane warehouse, so what you test in-store is generally what you can take home.
FAQs
Why does the same firmness feel different between mattress brands?
Firmness is a feel created by spring wire gauge and comfort-layer density, not a standardised rating. Two mattresses both labelled "medium" can feel noticeably different depending on how the manufacturer built them — which is exactly why testing in a showroom beats ordering from a description alone.
How long should I lie on a mattress in the showroom before deciding?
Aim for at least several minutes per mattress in your normal sleeping position, rather than a quick sit-and-press. Your body needs time to settle before you can accurately judge sinking, pressure points, or overall comfort.
What's the difference between edge support and motion isolation?
Edge support is how well the mattress holds its shape at the outer perimeter when you sit or lie near the edge. Motion isolation is how much movement on one side of the bed transfers across to the other side. They're both worth testing but are separate qualities — a mattress can be strong in one and weaker in the other.
Which A2Z Furniture showrooms can I test mattresses at?
We have five South-East Queensland showrooms: Rocklea, Virginia, Bundall, North Ipswich and Beenleigh. Stock is held in our own Brisbane warehouse and pick-up is available seven days a week.
Is "orthopedic" a real mattress certification?
No — "orthopedic" is a marketing term rather than a certified medical category. Some of our model names reference it, but we describe mattresses by firmness, support and construction rather than making medical claims, and recommend testing in person for how a mattress actually feels for you.
