Moving Guide • Queensland (QLD)

Moving house is already a big job — furniture is usually the part that causes the most stress (heavy lifts, tight doorways, scratches, rain surprises). This guide gives you a furniture-first plan that’s simple on mobile and practical for Queensland homes.

Last updated: 5 March 2026 Read time: ~10 minutes Made by The A2Z Furniture team (serving QLD since 2013)

We’re based in QLD with showrooms in Rocklea, Sandgate, North Ipswich, Beenleigh and Bundall.

Moving boxes and household items prepared for moving day, representing an organised furniture move
Goal: fewer surprises, less damage, and a calmer moving day.

The 10-minute furniture moving plan (stress down, control up)

1) Measure first

Measure the biggest items (sofa, fridge space, bed base) + your tightest access points (stairs, hallways, lifts, doorways).

This one step prevents the classic “it doesn’t fit” problem.

2) Protect surfaces

Blankets + corner guards + stretch wrap (on blankets, not on timber) prevent chips, tears and rub marks in the truck.

3) Lift smarter

Plan the route, clear hazards, use trolleys/straps, and team-lift bulky items. Manual handling injuries are common — take it seriously.

See WorkSafe QLD guidance on hazardous manual tasks: WorkSafe.qld.gov.au

QLD-specific reality check: heat, humidity and sudden storms can damage furniture if you rush or leave items exposed.

If you’re using a removalist, QLD Government suggests comparing quotes, checking reviews, and considering AFRA membership. Read the official guidance.

Timeline: what to do (2 weeks → moving day)

2 weeks out

  • Declutter bulky items early (sell/donate/recycle).
  • Book help (friends, trolley hire, or a removalist).
  • Start a “hardware bag” system (zip bags + labels per item).

1 week out

  • Pack non-essentials + fragile décor.
  • Disassemble what you can (beds, table legs, shelving).
  • Prep an “essentials box” (chargers, tools, kettle, toiletries).

1–2 days out

  • Confirm access: lifts booked, parking, stair clearance.
  • Protect floors (old towels, runners, cardboard paths).
  • Wrap furniture and label “THIS SIDE UP / FRAGILE”.

Moving day

  • Load heavy items first, strap them in, then stack lighter boxes.
  • Keep fabric away from rain/wet surfaces (tarps help).
  • Do a final walkthrough: cupboards, garage, balcony, yard.

Your furniture protection kit (what pros rely on)

Must-haves

  • Moving blankets / thick quilts (scratch protection)
  • Stretch wrap (secure blankets + stop drawers opening)
  • Corner protectors + cardboard sheets (chips + dent protection)
  • Painter’s tape + labels (no sticky residue)
  • Ratchet straps / tie-downs (truck safety)

For packing technique detail, see this AU removalist-style guide: Upmove packing & wrapping guide.

Furniture-friendly extras

These reduce damage and make unpacking faster:

  • Furniture sliders (tile/wood)
  • Mattress bag (keeps it clean + dry)
  • Tool kit: Allen keys, screwdriver, small spanner
  • Microfibre cloths (quick wipe-down after moving)

Moving a mattress? Consider adding a protector when you arrive: Mattress protectors.

Quick protection guide by material

Furniture type Best protection Common mistake to avoid
Fabric sofas / lounges Blanket first, then stretch wrap over the blanket Wrapping fabric directly in plastic if it’s wet/humid (traps moisture)
Leather / faux leather Soft blanket + avoid pressure points; keep out of sun/heat in the truck Over-tight strapping that creases upholstery
Timber furniture Blankets + corner guards; keep airflow if weather is humid Plastic directly against timber (can trap moisture)
Glass / marble tops Remove top if possible; wrap edges; transport upright with padding Laying glass flat under boxes

How to pack and move common furniture (step-by-step)

Sofas & modular lounges

  1. Remove cushions and bag small parts (feet, brackets).
  2. Photograph how pieces connect (helps reassembly).
  3. Blanket wrap each piece, then stretch wrap the blanket in place.
  4. Carry on its feet when possible; avoid dragging across thresholds.

If you’re upgrading after the move: lounges in stock across QLD.

Pro tip: blanket first, wrap second. That’s how you prevent rub marks.

Beds, bed frames & mattresses

  1. Strip bedding and pack separately.
  2. Bag and label all hardware (e.g., “Queen bed – headboard bolts”).
  3. Protect the mattress with a bag (or wrap cleanly and keep dry).
  4. Wrap headboard corners and edges (most damage happens here).

Need a new frame that’s easier to move next time? Storage-friendly options: bed frames with storage.

Dining tables, TV units & glass pieces

  1. Remove table legs (if possible) and wrap separately.
  2. For glass: remove the top, tape an “X” with painter’s tape, wrap edges, and transport upright.
  3. Keep hardware with the item (zip bag taped to underside).
  4. Load upright pieces against the truck wall, then strap securely.

Moving day: lifting safely + QLD weather protection

Lift safer (and protect your back)

  • Clear the path first (mats, cords, toys, wet areas).
  • Team lift bulky items; use a trolley for long distances.
  • Keep loads close to your body; avoid twisting while carrying.
  • If it’s awkward, stop and re-plan. Injuries often happen when rushing.

Official manual task guidance: WorkSafe QLD and Safe Work Australia.

If it rains (common in SE QLD)

  • Keep tarps handy and stage furniture inside until the truck is ready.
  • Use towels/cardboard at entry points to prevent slips and floor damage.
  • Don’t trap moisture against timber or fabric — allow airflow once inside.
  • Wipe down and air-dry wrapped items ASAP after arrival.

Choosing a removalist (quick trust checklist)

Compare quotes, confirm what’s included, and check reviews. QLD Government also suggests considering AFRA membership. Read the QLD guidance. AFRA is Australia’s peak removals industry body: afra.com.au.

After you arrive: reassembly, settling in, and furniture care

Unwrap in the right order

  • Place large items first (beds, sofa, dining table), then unpack boxes.
  • Inspect corners/legs before you throw wrapping away.
  • Keep hardware bags with the furniture until fully assembled.

Refresh and protect

Once you’re in, it’s the perfect time to protect your investment:

FAQs (quick answers)

How far ahead should I start preparing furniture for a move?

Aim for 2–4 weeks. Start with decluttering, measuring access points, and gathering protection materials. Disassemble big items during the final week.

What’s the best way to protect a fabric sofa or lounge?

Remove cushions, blanket-wrap the frame, then use stretch wrap over the blanket to hold it in place. Avoid wrapping fabric directly in plastic if it’s humid or raining.

Should I wrap timber furniture directly in plastic?

Usually no. Plastic can trap moisture, especially in QLD humidity. Use blankets and corner guards; add wrap over the blanket to secure it.

Do I need to disassemble bed frames and dining tables?

If it makes the item safer and easier to carry, yes. Remove legs, headboards, shelves and glass tops where possible, and keep all hardware in labelled zip bags.

How do I move a mattress without damaging it?

Use a mattress bag, keep it dry, and avoid bending it sharply (especially foam). Carry it on its side with two people if possible.

How do I choose a reputable removalist in Queensland?

Compare quotes, check reviews, confirm insurance/options, and consider industry membership such as AFRA. QLD Government has a practical checklist for choosing a removalist.

What should I do with unwanted bulky furniture in Brisbane?

Sell/donate where you can. For disposal, Brisbane City Council’s kerbside collection may accept certain large household items (check what’s allowed and your collection week).
